  • It’s a beautiful day to tour a state fish hatchery and “Fish with the Commish!” ☀🐟 Members of Minnesota Trout Unlimited, Student Angler Tournament Trail, Woman Fly Fishers of Minnesota and other guests toured Crystal Springs Hatchery and fished for trout with DNR Commissioner Sarah Strommen at Whitewater State Park this afternoon. The group fished at the site of a recently completed stream restoration that stabilized 1,800 feet of the Whitewater River channel to enhance the stream’s ecology, reduce water quality impairments, and improve aquatic habitat and public safety. More such stream restorations, and also dam modification projects and culvert replacements, will be completed thanks to last year’s historic Get Out MORE funding. The Get Out MORE investments also provide key funding to restore our state’s aging fish hatcheries, including the Crystal Springs Hatchery in Winona County. Commissioner Strommen led the group on a tour through Crystal Springs and highlighted major renovations planned for the hatchery, which include constructing a new hatchery building and replacing degraded raceways and waterlines. • 🌳 This past Saturday, City of South St. Paul planted around 90 trees to help restore their urban forest, which lost a third of its trees to emerald ash borer. With the help of Tree Trust, Conservation Corps Minnesota & Iowa, and local volunteers, a diverse variety of tree species were planted to create a resilient tree canopy for future generations. Representative Hansen and DNR Assistant Commissioner Lotthammer joined the effort and highlighted the historic funding provided by the Minnesota Legislature over the past two years to help communities across the state. Funding for today’s planting was provided by DNR as part of a Minnesota Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund grant supporting 35 communities that will plant 2,500 trees and treat about 4,000 trees against EAB across the state. 📷 Tree Trust and local volunteers plant trees along South Saint Paul's Boulevard. 📷 From left, Jimmy Francis, mayor of South Saint Paul; Representative Rick Hansen; Representative Sonya Harper; Shannon Lotthammer, DNR Assistant Commissioner; and Jared Smith, Executive Director & CEO at Tree Trust
