About us

Michigan Central is a hub in Detroit dedicated to advancing new technologies and programs that address barriers to greater social, economic, and physical mobility. Anchored by the iconic, reimagined Michigan Central Station, Michigan Central is both a convening place and a call-to-action - for city, regional and international inventors and investors, academics and entrepreneurs, civil society voices and government leaders, and business owners and corporate partners - to advance a more sustainable, equitable future through a community-based approach to mobility solutions. This vibrant 30-acre site nestled between the Corktown and Southwest Detroit neighborhoods will serve as a destination for Detroiters and visitors alike - inviting people to shop, dine out, attend concerts and live events, and participate in educational programming, while innovators create in purpose-built spaces with smart infrastructure and embedded technology. Building on Detroit’s rich history as an engine of change, the transformative project aims to strengthen the city’s existing fabric of community and electrify its economy, while inspiring collective action on the most pressing challenges at the intersection of mobility and society worldwide. The right mobility solutions have massive potential to change the world for the better. Creating them will take the world’s best minds, working together, at Michigan Central.

One year and more than 100 startups! We opened last April with 25 startups, and since then, we have grown into a thriving community of 106 member startups and their 673 employees and founders in the fields of mobility, transportation, logistics, climate tech and more. The technology of tomorrow is being created right now, right here in Detroit! “This is proof of the power and potential of the economic engine that we are building here in Detroit, and the realization of Bill Ford and Ford Motor Co.’s vision to create an open platform ecosystem that draws on our region’s incredible talent and legacy of innovation to help solve many of the world’s challenges,” said Josh Sirefman, CEO of Michigan Central. Highlighting the impact of this growth, Newlab CEO Cam Lawrence added, “It’s been inspiring to see the rapid growth at Newlab in Detroit and of the Michigan Central cultural hub. It proves that the work we are doing together is creating a truly differentiated place to build a business and founders are responding,” Interested in joining the Newlab at Michigan Central community? Think Big. Start Small. Scale Fast. "The first thing is to hang on to everybody who is talented, entrepreneurial, wants to make an impact, and start attracting more." — Dan Gilbert We must nurture and foster the creative economy. We need to hold on to all of them. Last year, when Alexa Turnage and Johnnie Turnage created Black Tech Saturdays, it was driven by the realization of how important it was to fill this gap. At the heart of our work is a love for our community that drives us. Saturdays Summer Kickoff was everything we dreamed it could be. Our panel on Entertainment and Technology dropped gems! Thank you, Ebony JJ Curry, MSJ , Randi Rossario, and Gerard Victor. Michigan's First Chief Innovation Ecosystem Officer, Ben Marchionna , joined us. We had DJ SlikkMoney, Caleb Conley, and Karl Stafford, the "Black Tech DJs," on deck! A very healthy lunch, thanks to Newlab. Free headshots that turned out amazing by Shawn Lee, Cr. Photog., The $1000 competition for the best recap video brought some of Detroit's most talented creatives, and we can't wait to see the results. Thank you, everyone, for all your support. What's your vision for the future?    Immerse yourself in "me + you," an interactive AI and light sculpture by the acclaimed Suchi Reddy, situated in The Station’s South Concourse. Speak a single word representing your vision for the future and watch as open-source AI technology transforms it into a dazzling pattern of light and color that shimmers like a mandala. Large-scale circular portals then capture and reflect the collective feelings of all participants, showing our connection to each other and our influence on one another.    To date, the most frequently spoken words—"bright," "great," and "amazing"—mirror the overwhelmingly positive outlook of the Detroit community about their shared future.    Join us in person for self-guided tours from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Fridays and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays or participate remotely from your desktop or phone at meplusyoudetroit.com or. No tickets are required. We look forward to witnessing your contributions!
