Backseat Shenanigans. Spring and summer are obviously a much a safer bet for outdoor shooting in the UK. I’ve got a handful of clients raring to go but “let’s wait for the better weather” - for one project last week the client just couldn’t wait so we had to shoot Virtually in an LED volume and enjoyed deity-level control over weather, time of day, sun position, terrain and foliage cover. For traditional live action shoots however, despite all forecasts to the contrary, sometimes the heavens just open and you have to fling all the kit on the back seat real quick and get out of a torrential downpour. Surprisingly on reflection, despite doing thousands of jobs in the UK over the past 20 years, I can only think of twice that the rain has actually 100% halted production. Some bits of kit are weather sealed and some really really don’t like it at all. This one was in Norfolk; 4 actors, 2 vehicles, plus a closed road for an accident reconstruction (confession: I think we might have accidentally waterboarded one of the stunt actors briefly). Camera rain capes are always packed but the ORCA Production Brolly is brilliant, essentially a large golfing style umbrella but with a (quite seriously overpriced) threaded aluminium handle which fits onto all manner of lighting stand spigots, super-clamps, Noga arms and general exciting bits of grip fixture. Pro tip: you can never have too many sandbags when the wind whips up. I’ve seen it effortlessly launch a massive weighty rig with a Mary-Poppins-like aplomb. Having a people carrier close by is always super handy so you can use it as a mobile staging area, lens depot, battery charging station, butty waggon and short notice refuge from the weather for both kit, crew and talent alike. Aside from the actual shoot itself, never underestimate how even moderately variable weather can cause arse-ache in the form of continuity issues in post-production. Projects are hardly ever shot chronologically – visual and audio cuts can jump around a bit, meteorologically speaking. Please don’t share any foul weather shooting tips in the comments below as this would be a hollow and transparent attempt to play the social algorithms and force a superficial and disingenuous engagement with an audience. It’s a slippery slope, I may as well be asking you how many sugars you have in your tea and what your favourite colour is (just a sweetener thanks / green).

That’s a lot of magnification for a compact scope that offers a compromise between fast, close target acquisition and hit targets out to medium range. Both FFP and SFP models are available. For pistols, the red-dot optic market is still hot with enclosed LED emitter red dots. These are models that look like a mini black box mounted to the pistol slide. Binoculars and spotting scopes continue to evolve with many rugged models at affordable price points. The next big hot item is thermal scopes. Here are the details.
