About us

MORE THAN 100 YEARS STRONG, MSCI IS THE BROADEST-BASED NOT-FOR-PROFIT ASSOCIATION SERVING THE INDUSTRIAL METALS INDUSTRY The Metals Service Center Institute (MSCI) is a North American trade association that supports and represents the broadest representation of the metals value chain, including metals producers, distributors, processors, and to a lesser extent, the interests of metals users. Because its primary membership consists of metals service centers—businesses that inventory and distribute metals for industrial customers and perform first stage processing—MSCI is ideally situated to identify and respond to the networking, educational, public policy, and research needs of the entire metals community. MSCI’s mission is to promote the health of the metals industry, providing member companies with a broad range of strategic and tactical information they cannot get anywhere else. We are the primary resource for the most accurate and reliable metals-focused economic trends data, for original industry and economic insight and perspective, and for leadership education and executive training. MSCI creates a business community where members can grow and prosper together. The metals value chain generates more than $620 billion in economic activity in the United States and is directly responsible for sustaining 1.3 million jobs and nearly $103 billion in wages. MSCI member companies operate in more than 2,000 locations throughout North America. For the last 109 years, MSCI has provided a vision and a voice to the metals industry, along with the tools and perspective necessary for a more successful business. A message from our President and CEO Bob Weidner: I am delighted to share with our members some very exciting announcements about MSCI’s team. First, on July 1 Ann Zastrow returned to our team. She succeeds Monique Combs as our Vice President of Knowledge and Learning.    Many of you may remember Ann, who served MSCI in a similar capacity a decade ago. Among Ann’s many accomplishments at MSCI were the launch of MetalLearn® and our 20-year-old proprietary Strategic Metals Management, which is now accepting registrations for January 2025 and Cohort XVII.    Ann began her career in the steel industry with Inland Steel in labor relations. For the past decade, she has held positions in executive education and professional development at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management and the College of Lake County. She is a seasoned human resource and education professional with more than 30 years of experience. Ann earned an M.Ed. in adult education and training and has held leadership positions in employee relations, retention, professional development, executive education, compensation and benefits, high-performance organizations, and labor relations. She will work closely with MSCI’s account management team to reach out to HR departments and CHROs as MSCI continues to be a resource for member companies when it comes to human capital management. Ann will leverage her experiences to both enhance our open enrollment programs and grow our dedicated company Knowledge and Learning offerings.    In addition to her Knowledge and Learning responsibilities, Ann will be the liaison to the Tubular Council and to the Central New York, St. Louis, and New York Chapters.    Second, Darci Bertoncello has been promoted to the new position of Director of Chapter Ambassadors and Strategic Reporting. For more than 10 years Darci has served as my executive assistant. Her performance has been exemplary. Darci is totally committed to delivering value to our members and has demonstrated a strong work ethic, innovative spirit, and positive attitude to her work from day one. She has a curious mind, takes on additional responsibilities without hesitation, is a consummate team player, and has exceptional communication and organizational skills.    In this new capacity, Darci will execute the biannual Chapter Leadership Symposium, overhaul our Chapter leadership Manual, develop reporting tools for Chapter Leadership engagement in our thought leadership webinar series, create best practices to help Chapters increase scholarship fundraising, improve programming content, and ensure good governance. She will continue to be a member of our accounting team in the development and upkeep of our board strategic reports and other managerial reports as deemed needed by the President and CEO. Darci also will serve as liaison to the Canadian, Southern California, and Arizona Chapters.    Join me in welcoming back Ann and congratulating Darci.    Cheers!    Sincerely, Bob Weidner

  • The Metals Service Center Institute (MSCI) joined the Alliance to Fight for Health Care and nearly 70 other business organizations, employers, labor unions, patient and disease advocacy groups, and healthcare stakeholders to send a letter reminding members of Congress about the value of employer-provided healthcare coverage and explaining why it should remain tax-free. The letter comes after several legislative proposals have been offered or considered in the U.S. House and Senate that would tax employer-provided healthcare coverage even though employee-sponsored healthcare coverage has never been recognized as income to the employee and would result in increased taxes on millions of American families. The letter argued, “In addition to broad societal benefits and underpinning the stability of our healthcare system, the current tax-favored treatment of employer-provided health coverage delivers critical value for employers, workers and their families, and the federal government itself.” Taxing benefits would not lower the cost healthcare, the letter said, but would reduce healthcare access. For workers and their families, employer-sponsored healthcare promotes healthcare access and ensures they are treated equitably wherever they live or work. Indeed, the cost of healthcare services often varies significantly based on location. If employees were taxed on the cost of their healthcare coverage, there would be a disproportionate impact on Americans who live in areas of the country where costs are higher. The letter also noted U.S. workers values these benefits. Polling has indicated 96 percent of workers view their employer-provided health insurance as important to them. Employees also are satisfied with the coverage they receive from their employers. The Alliance to Fight for Health Care is a broad-based coalition comprised of businesses, patient advocates, employer organizations, labor unions, healthcare companies, consumer groups, and other stakeholders that support employer-provided health coverage. The Alliance works to ensure employer-provided coverage remains an available and affordable option for working Americans and their families.
