SMA was fully engaged in advocacy this week advocating for swift passage of the Leveling the Playing Field Act 2.0, discussing America's carbon advantage with the Bipartisan Policy Center, and discussing trade issues with the U.S. Department of Commerce and Office of the U.S. Trade Representative. Thank you SMA members Metallus Inc. (Kris Westbrooks, Andrew Bissot and Danielle Higgins); Vallourec - North America (Gary Hauck); JSW Steel USA (Robert Simon) for making the trip to our nation's capital to represent 21st century steelmakers.

In "Stop Building Renewable Energy Infrastructure with High-Emissions Imported Steel," his latest contribution to Steel Market Update, SMA President Philip K. Bell, CAE points out that "the domestic steel industry, with its capacity to produce world-class steel with the world’s smallest carbon footprint, should be at the forefront" of the renewable energy supply chain. At the Bipartisan Policy Center’s Climate and Trade Summit on Capitol Hill this week, SMA’s Brandon Farris explained to an audience of policy makers, climate leaders and congressional staff members the significance of the American steel industry’s carbon advantage over the rest of the world. Speaking at the Bipartisan Policy Center's Climate and Trade Summit in Washington this week, Catrina Rorke of the Climate Leadership Council noted that American steelmakers are "ahead of the curve" when it comes to gathering data on carbon emissions. The data reveals that "the U.S. is the most carbon efficient producer of steel in the world," she says. In other words, American steelmakers have a significant carbon advantage over other steelmaking countries. And ongoing investments in sustainable steelmaking by SMA members help America stay ahead of the global competition.

We were happy to facilitate meetings for SMA member JSW Steel USA and CEO Robert Simon with staff from the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (pictured) and the U.S. Department of Commerce in Washington today. We are grateful to USTR's Daniel Matthews, Commerce's Dawn Shackleford and other government officials for sitting down with us in the middle of a busy week to talk about issues of pressing importance to domestic steelmakers.

The U.S. domestic steel industry has a tremendous carbon advantage over the rest of the world and your legislation will allow us to do exactly what the title says: prove it. Steel production in the U.S. is 75-320% more carbon efficient than traditional global production. We look forward to working with Congress to ensure that PROVE IT and other similar legislation will help demonstrate that our domestic industry is the cleanest globally.
