Bad news for the economy may be good news for small caps. In his 2Q2024 Quick Take video, Mesirow Equity Management's CIO and PM, Leo Harmon, CFA, CAIA, provides his quarterly commentary update where he explains that the small cap equity markets have become linked to the anticipated actions of the Fed, and less anchored in long-term policy as their focus has shifted towards analyzing increment data. "We are now entering the 14th year of large cap outperforming small cap, and on a rolling 10-Year measurement the performance of small cap is close to historical lows relative to large cap. However, relative performance like this has historically been a favorable backdrop for future small cap outperformance." The US dollar cycled throughout the second quarter, recovering in June after a large drop in May. Australian dollar was the high performer of the G10 for the quarter, Euro landed in the lower end, Sterling was a middling performer, and USDJPY reached 161.27 on the last day of the quarter, a level not seen since 1986.
