Mercy Corps is horrified by the alarming continuation of violence committed against civilians in Israel and Gaza, and deeply concerned by the unfolding humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza. As the conflict escalates, the urgent need for humanitarian assistance - and supplies including water, food and fuel - intensifies. Mercy Corps has worked in the West Bank and Gaza since 1986, providing humanitarian support including access to water, working with children and young people, and connecting people to economic opportunities in an area where unemployment is over 40 percent. We are working to restart our humanitarian programs in Gaza and our team members there are committed to significantly ramping up much-needed lifesaving assistance as soon as it is safe to do so. #gaza #israel #palestine #humanitarianaid

About us
POWERED BY POSSIBLE The world is more fragile than ever. Food shortages have left millions of people hungry, while violent conflict has sent millions on the run. From poverty and malnutrition to natural disasters and climate change, it’s easy to see a world of insurmountable challenges. Instead, we see an opportunity to create transformative change. We see the world differently. In crisis, we believe in the power of human potential. In struggle, we believe in the ability of communities to grow stronger. So we act differently. We understand that communities are the best agents of their own change and local markets are the best engines of long-term recovery. In more than 40 countries, we partner to put bold solutions into action, helping people triumph over adversity and grow stronger from within. For the refugee who dreams of rebuilding her country, for the mother who wants a healthy future for her children — for millions of people filled with the power of possibility —Mercy Corps connects people to the resources they need to build better, stronger lives. We create transformative change. Mercy Corps has responded to nearly every global emergency over the past 20 years. Since 1979, we have provided $3.7 billion in lifesaving assistance throughout the world. Each year we infuse millions of dollars into local economies through small business loans and grants to provide livelihoods for the world’s most vulnerable people. We are empowering more than 100,000 youth trapped by violent conflict to overcome the profound stress of war and become change makers in their communities. We are powered by the belief that a better world is possible. Join us.

Lucy Helm served 11 years on our Mercy Corps board and her leadership was visionary, stabilizing, and transformational. We deeply appreciate all that Lucy has done for us and are inspired by her commitment to service!
Doing things for others is in Lucy Helm’s bones. For the former chief partner officer and current Starbucks Alumni Community member, caring for others is at the root of nearly everything she does. “I have always been drawn to the ‘helping’ professions,” Lucy reflects. Lucy brought her “helping” mantra to Starbucks on day one. “I asked my hiring manager, Starbucks general counsel Shelley Milano, if it would be possible to continue my volunteer work as a pro bono lawyer, serving people who could not afford legal services. Not only did she say yes, but she also put me in charge of creating a committee to organize our Starbucks legal team to provide pro bono legal services.” After an illustrious 21 years of serving partners and her community, Lucy hung up the green apron. But her service to others never ceased. Lucy continues to sit on the board of directors for two amazing nonprofits. The first, Mercy Corps, an organization that connects people to the resources they need to build better, stronger lives. The second, the Campaign for the Fair Sentencing of Youth, led by fellow alumni member Xavier McElrath-Bey, MA, is a national nonprofit that leads efforts to ban juvenile life without parole and other extreme sentences for children. Lucy’s service also found its way to the disability community. For over 20 years, she’s helped lead a summer camp for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. More than 60 campers with many types of disabilities come to Camp Parkview each year, along with volunteer counselors like Lucy. She also serves on the advisory board of Disability Rights Advocates, a national disability rights legal center To hear her incredible story and learn more about her allyship and advocacy for persons with disabilities, Starbucks Alumni Community members can join Lucy in a fireside chat for Disability Advocacy Pride Month on July 23rd. We're facing an unprecedented global displacement crisis as raging conflicts and fallout from climate change uproot millions from their homes, communities and countries. UNHCR estimates that 120 million people around the world were displaced as of April of this year, which is double the number 10 years ago. Meanwhile, traditional aid models for refugee assistance are failing under the massive and unsustainable strain on the global humanitarian system. We must go beyond business as usual and find a new way forward. On World Refugee Day, I join Dianne Calvi in urging new approaches to support refugees - including an initiative Mercy Corps and Village Enterprise are pioneering to build refugee self-reliance by helping refugees start small enterprises in displacement camps. On #WorldRefugeeDay, read an op-ed by Dianne Calvi and Tjada D'Oyen McKenna in the World Economic Forum: https://bit.ly/4coxuBn "Innovation and self-reliance should be the thread that runs through interventions to support refugees, empowering people to rebuild their lives." 🌍 As the global refugee crisis continues to be exacerbated by ongoing conflict and climate change, Dianne Calvi and Tjada D'Oyen McKenna, the CEOs of Village Enterprise and Mercy Corps, emphasize the need for more innovative approaches to better support refugees. Village Enterprise and Mercy Corps are already implementing one of those solutions together—DREAMS. DREAMS is an award-winning, first-of-its-kind model that combines Village Enterprise's poverty graduation program and Mercy Corps' expertise in market systems development. By empowering refugees to become entrepreneurs and enhancing local economies, DREAMS equips refugees to launch successful businesses, lift their families out of poverty, and rebuild their lives. This #WorldRefugeeDay, we honor the 30 million+ refugees across the world who are fighting for a better life despite the challenges of displacement. 🤍 As conflicts become more complex and prolonged, refugees are too often trapped in limbo, their skills, dreams, and aspirations on hold. That’s why the DREAMS program supports refugees as they establish businesses, engage local markets, and move out of survival mode. More sustainable livelihood assistance goes beyond business training and seed money—DREAMS is supporting a pathway for refugees to flourish as their whole selves. ➡️ Swipe to learn more. #DREAMStoReality
