Meet Sylvia. She’s an active lady who loves to travel and work in her flower garden. She also had a large hernia causing significant pain and affecting her quality of life. Sylvia was referred to Dr. Chip Barnes, fellowship-trained master robotic and general surgeon with Memorial Health University Physicians. He performed a robotic-assisted hernia repair surgery. And Sylvia is back to growing award-winning roses. Watch her story. Learn more about robotic surgery at Memorial Health: https://bit.ly/3W3vlnD

Congratulations to Beth Benson, physical therapist in our outpatient rehabilitation department. She’s our most recent Extra Mile Award recipient. She was nominated by a patient for the compassionate care she provides. The nomination read, “Beth has gone above and beyond for me. I was progressing well with my therapy when she became concerned with another issue. To help with this, she gave me some exercises I could do at home. She was so supportive, kind and attentive.” Beth, thank you for the difference you make for our patients. Our Extra Mile Award recognizes colleagues who go above and beyond their job duties to create an exceptional patient experience. You can nominate a colleague for this award at: https://bit.ly/3OIerFC

This week, we hosted 15 students from the City of Savannah's Moses Jackson Community Center's Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Robotics Summer Camp. The students watched Dr. Jason McClune and his team demonstrate the latest robotic bronchoscopy technology for diagnosing lung cancer and had the opportunity to drive the device. Dr. Tim Connelly discussed the advantages (and drawbacks) of AI in healthcare. And, Dr. Chip Barnes explained the benefits of robotic-assisted surgeries and demonstrated how these surgeries are performed. Each student was given the opportunity to use the robot to perform a suture procedure. It was a great day of learning and fun with these bright young students.
