Councilmember Laurie-Anne Sayles hosted the latest in her series of community conversations at the County Regional Service Centers aimed at creating safe and vibrant communities. Councilmember Sayles was joined by Greater Silver Spring Chamber of Commerce President & CEO Stephanie Helsing, MCEDC'S VP of Research & Policy Frankie Clogston, Ph.D., along with representatives from Montgomery County Public Schools, Montgomery Parks, local law enforcement, community leaders and business owners. Participants offered helpful dialogue towards creating safer communities and more opportunities for all to grow.

Congratulations to Bethesda’s Solaxa Inc., a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company developing treatments for children and adults suffering from nerve injuries and rare neurodegenerative diseases, including multiple sclerosis. Solaxa recently received a $500,000 investment from TEDCO to further their groundbreaking research and development (R&D). The investment is from TEDCO’s Venture Funds, with a $200,000 allocation from the State Small Business Credit Initiative funding. Montgomery County Government Council President Andrew Friedson and Montgomery County Economic Development Corporation - Maryland's Bill Tompkins gave remarks at the Executive Roundtable with Asian Business Leader and Sponsor Appreciation Luncheon hosted by Cindy Shao and the Asian American Chamber of Commerce at Lao Sze Chuan Restaurant in North Bethesda. Amazing talent lives in Montgomery County, Md! Starting this week, 820 Montgomery County Public Schools middle school students will attend #MontgomeryCanCode. Students will explore coding using #Swift to create apps that demonstrate the new skills they’ve developed. Now in its sixth year, this innovative public-private partnership formed by Montgomery College, MCPS and MCEDC—in collaboration with Apple—provides middle school students with a valuable advantage for the future! Your input is needed! Montgomery County Government is conducting a comprehensive disparity study to determine whether there is racial and/or gender business discrimination in the markets in which the county does business. The overall purpose of the study is to determine the effects of race, ethnicity, or gender on a businesses’ ability to do business in the county – both public and private sectors – acquire capital such as loans, bonding and win contracts or subcontracts in the marketplace in which Montgomery County does business with a focus on minority-, female- and disabled-owned companies that conduct business within the Montgomery County region.
