"I just wanted to thank the department for the pleasant experience that they had given me. My experience from check-in with the department’s front desk to the recovery point was really awesome. The front desk clerk was not uptight at all, had a good sense of humor. Nurse Aide, Delbert was really casual and made me feel comfortable. Beverly, Chloe, and Rose were great. They were very good at communicating and easing any uncomfortable feeling. Last but not least, Dr. Matsuyama was awesome. He was quick and real easy going. He gave a good vibe in the procedure room." Military personnel, local volunteers, and the Hawaii Health Emergency Management services conducted a mass casualty exercise as part of the Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) camp during the recent RIMPAC (Rim of the Pacific Exercise). Volunteers from Maui Health, which included staff from Maui Memorial Medical Center and Kula Hospital, were airlifted to Pearl Harbor by the Mexican Navy's helicopters. Volunteers simulated injuries and realistic wounds as part of the disaster drill and were processed through the field hospital on Ford Island before returning to Maui. The exercise focused on emergency preparedness for Hawaii hospitals, ensuring both military and civilian teams are well-equipped to handle critical situations effectively.

Congratulations to Maui Health’s Trauma Program and Injury Prevention Coordinator, Cameron Rogers, RN, for being honored with the coveted “Best Practice Award” from Trauma Centers Association of America (TCAA) for their impactful mini-education session, “Trauma PACU Escape-Room-of-Errors.” This session, designed to enhance trauma response skills, was a hit at TCAA’s 26th Annual Trauma Conference, held this April in Nashville, TN, where Cameron accepted the award and spoke on behalf of Maui Health. “The audience loved our ‘PACU escape room’ trauma exercise, and many other trauma centers who attended asked for copies of the presentation so that they could take it back to their PACU teams as well,” said Cameron. “ I want to extend a huge thank you to the charge nurses, PACU managers, and PACU team who made the education sessions at Maui Memorial a success in the first place. We hope to bring our escape rooms to other areas this summer.” Maui Health’s Trauma Injury Prevention Program helps to educate both employees and community members on preventing traumatic injuries. Last month we had the privilege of hosting representatives from Johns Hopkins Activity and Mobility Promotion (JH-AMP) Program at Maui Memorial Medical Center as part of our recent launch of EveryBODY Moves. They hosted multiple training sessions for new mobility advocates and facilitated several in-depth discussions with our teams. These sessions also provided an opportunity for Certified Educators from Maui Health's AMP Program to assume the role of trainers and receive valuable feedback from the JH-AMP team, equipping them to train future advocates. To learn more about this vital program, visit www.mauihealth.org/blog.

"Aloha, it would be hard to express my deepest gratitude to everyone on the swing unit after a transfer from MMMC. From Ray and Constantine (admissions and transfer arrangements) to Dr. Scott and the team that took such good care of me. I thank all the nurses, including Victoria, Liz, Michael, Rebecca, Alexia, Vickie, Josh and anyone else who I might have omitted — everyone was wonderful. I thank the housekeeping staff who kept the room clean, the kitchen for their healthy and delicious meals. And especially, Dr. Scott, for his thoroughness and listening and really paying complete attention to my situation. He went above and beyond to get me the necessary medications and took my symptoms seriously. He is a true gem in the medical field and I will always be grateful to the team who took such good care of me and put my fears at rest. I am also thankful for the PT/OT professionals for working with me and listening to my concerns and helping every step of the way — Beth, Taylor, Laura. They went above and beyond and the time they spent with me and their encouragement accelerated my improvement every day. Mahalo Nui." Mahalo for your kind words about our wonderful team at Kula Hospital! #ThankYouThursday If you would also like to share a word of gratitude, please visit www.mauihealth.org/mahalo.

Auxiliary Volunteer President Barbara Potopowitz along with volunteers Matt Welsh and Ed Quiring presented the Auxiliary's first EDucation Scholarship! Named after long-time volunteer Ed Quiring, Junior Volunteer Brenna (second from the left in photo), was presented the scholarship during Senior Awards Night at Maui High School. “When they called my name to come up to the podium to award the scholarship, I was filled with so much pride and tears in my eyes,” said Barbara. “It was just as if she were our own child. In a way all our Junior Volunteers have become our personal second wave of children as we watch them flourish and develop their skills in the fields of health care.” Brenna's intended field of study will lead to a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing and plans to return to Maui to work in the health care field. The EDucation Junior Volunteer Scholarship was established in December 2023 with the goal of raising additional funds to award more than one per year.
