The last color of the #PrideFlag 🏳️🌈 is black, which represents diversity. 🖤 As we close out #PrideMonth, our final spotlight is Bayard Rustin (1912–1987), an American political activist and prominent leader in the Civil Rights and #LGBTQ+ Rights movements. In the 1980s, Bayard became a part of the LGBTQ+ movement and an advocate for AIDS education. Evident in the intersectionality of his work, he felt that injustices everywhere should never be tolerated and must be protested. The sun has set on the 71st Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, and much has been written regarding #AI in the advertising industry, the future of PR and celebrities du jour, including Christy Teigen, John Legend, Jose Andres, and more! Amid the fanfare, #pharma continues to loom large. The next color of the #PrideFlag 🏳️🌈 is brown, which represents inclusivity. 🤎 Marsha P. Johnson (1945-1992) was an outspoken LGBTQ+ rights activist and advocate for transgender people of color like herself. Marsha found joy as a drag queen in New York City’s LGBTQ+ hub, Greenwich Village, and was a key figure in the 1969 Stonewall Riots. She worked with Sylvia Rivera to establish Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR); a group committed to helping transgender youth in New York City. In the 1980s, Johnson’s activism grew to include the AIDS epidemic as she joined Act Up, a prominent organization dedicated to the cause. Learn more about Marsha at https://lnkd.in/eU7x9ZzP

❤️ Red stands for Love & Life in the #PrideFlag. 🏳️🌈 We’re honoring Barbara Gittings (1932-2007), widely considered the mother of the LGBTQ+ civil rights movement. In 1958, Barbara started the New York chapter of Daughters of Bilitis (DOB), the first lesbian civil rights organization in the U.S. She also served as editor of the DOB’s publication, The Ladder, the first national lesbian magazine. Barbara and fellow organizer Frank Kameny waged a multi-year campaign for the declassification of homosexuality as a mental disorder. In 1973, with Gitting and Kameny present by invitation, the American Psychiatric Association announced the removal of its classification. To learn more, visit https://lnkd.in/e3uftg8P

Next up in our series exploring the colors of the #PrideFlag 🏳️🌈: orange represents healing. 🧡 Today, we recognize Sylvia Rivera (1951–2002), a trans Latina who fought against gender identity discrimination and took part in the Stonewall Riots at only 17. Throughout her life, she battled against the exclusion of transgender people, especially those of color, from the larger movement for gay rights. Along with Marsha P. Johnson, she started the Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR). This group tackled issues facing the transgender community in New York City and provided lodgings for those who needed it. Find out more by searching for Sylvia Rivera at womeshistory.org.

As we continue our #PrideFlag 🏳️🌈 series, we’re highlighting yellow today, which signifies sunlight. ☀️ In celebration of #PrideMonth, we’re spotlighting Stormé DeLarverie (1920–2014), a lifelong gay rights activist and drag performer. It's widely believed Stormé threw the first punch at the Stonewall Uprising in New York City in 1969. Alongside members of the #LGBTQ+ community like Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, her fight against the police became a ray of inspiration for the LGBTQ+ rights movement as we know it today. 💛 Visit storme-delarverie.com to learn more about Stormé's legacy and impact.
