Raising Bio-Based Industrial Feedstock in Marginal Lands.
About us
MarginUp! is developing sustainable and circular value chains to produce bioproducts and biofuels from natural raw materials grown on marginal lands. By introducing climate resilient and biodiversity-friendly non-food crops on marginal and low-productivity lands, MarginUp! will increase farming system resilience, enhance biodiversity, and promote stakeholder participation. 🌍 Did you know that soil is the most biodiverse habitat on Earth? 🌱 Soil organisms perform unique functions crucial for our food, fiber, and overall human and planetary health. Despite their significance, we've long lacked a quantitative estimate of soil biodiversity, complicating efforts to protect, preserve, and restore soil life. At MarginUp! EU!, we're committed to developing sustainable and circular value chains by producing bioproducts and biofuels from natural raw materials grown on marginal lands. ✨ MarginUp! identifies biophysical and social constraints for marginal lands in 7 regions. In our MarginUp! 𝗦𝘄𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗲, the main marginality factor is the low temperature during the cultivation season, due to long, dark, and cold winters. Recurring rainfall and high humidity starting in September further limit crop choices to feed such as grass, green fodder, and grain for animal production of milk and meat. To address these challenges, partners have chosen turnip rape. With a ripening time of 110-120 days, this industrial crop thrives in colder climates and can be used to produce biodiesel. Specifically, the Cordelia variety is selected for its high yield and oil content. This choice positively impacts soil quality, provides more crop rotation options for farmers, and offers a financial return comparable to oats and barley. 🌱🚜💧 Explore more of our use cases here. 👇 https://lnkd.in/eYQB_ZCy #biosphyics #circulareconomy #agriculture Zabala Innovation Europe Modular Home CTAEX Technological Centre Francisco Lázaro Mozos Valentín Maya Blanco

Nearly 30% of the #EU and #UK's agricultural area is classified as marginal, encompassing former lignite mines, degraded peatlands, and monoculture areas. While these lands have little agricultural or industrial value, converting them to #forest, #grassland, or #cropland isn't necessarily sustainable. Land-use changes can have severe environmental impacts, including increased #CO2 emissions and loss of #biodiversity. The Global Carbon Budget 2023 reveals that land-use change and forestry accounted for an average of 1.3 gigatons of carbon emissions from 2013-2022, with deforestation being a major driver. Let's rethink how we utilize marginal lands and avoid repeating past mistakes. Dive into this insightful article by Belén Gutiérrez Carmona to explore the development potential of marginal lands and their climate consequences. 📖 Read the full article here! https://lnkd.in/gDstS6sC #MarginalLands #LandUse #Biodiversity #EnvironmentalImpact #SoilHealth #CarbonEmissions #Deforestation
