The material solution to carbon capture

About us

Mantel is developing the first molten-salt based carbon capture technology. Our molten borates are designed to operate at the high temperatures found inside boilers, kilns, and furnaces – enabling highly efficient carbon capture that has not been possible until now. Carbon capture can be applied across industry to reduce emissions - and even achieve net-negative emissions. By solving for efficiency Mantel can reduce energy losses by more than 60% and cut costs in half, unlocking carbon capture’s role in reaching global net zero.

Bioenergy with Carbon Capture (BECCS) BECCS replaces fossil fuels with biogenic fuels, which combined with point source capture can result in negative emissions. BECCS combines features of all of the carbon capture approaches we have discussed so far. ⚙ How it works: Biomass captures CO2 as it grows as a natural climate solution, subsequently when biomass is used as a fuel any of the point-source carbon capture technologies, including Mantel's innovative approach, can be used to recover high-purity CO2. ♻ Applications: BECCS can be used to address any source of emissions anywhere, similar to DAC and Natural solutions. Biomass can also be used as a fuel for any heavy industrial process but the most obvious applications initially are industries that already process large quantities of sustainably sourced biomass such as pulp and paper, waste-to-energy, and bioenergy power plants. 💡 Opportunities: BECCS not only produces clean energy but also mitigates emissions by capturing CO2 during the combustion of biomass. It offers a potential pathway to achieve negative emissions, helping to address CO2 emissions from other challenging sources. ⚠ Challenges: Uncertainty about the long-term sustainability of biomass resources and their land use demands introduce challenges around scalability. Additionally, for new applications BECCS requires significant investment in infrastructure for biomass production, processing, as well as carbon capture and storage. #BECCS #bioenergy #carboncapture #netnegative #education #CCUS

📣 A Quick Policy Intermission 📣 🌍 Exciting News for the Carbon Capture Sector! 🌿 Canada has just introduced its first Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) Investment Tax Credit (ITC). 🔍 Why is this important for our partners? Canada's new policy offers up to 50% tax credits on qualified point source CCS expenses through 2030 (reducing to 25% from 2031-2040). This substantial financial support makes Mantel’s solutions even more cost-competitive, enhancing the economic feasibility of adopting advanced carbon capture technologies in Canada. ⏰ Opportunity Knocks: There's never been a better time to embark on CCS projects in Canada. With enhanced incentives available until 2030, we encourage industry leaders to leverage this window to accelerate their sustainability goals with cost-effective solutions. 🔎 While details are still being finalized, the overarching message is clear: Canada is paving the way for a sustainable industrial future, and Mantel is poised to be at the forefront of this transition. 📚 For a deeper dive into the new tax credits, check out the following page: https://lnkd.in/dwjrYgRC 🚀 Are you ready to reduce emissions and enhance sustainability in your operations? Oxy-Combustion Carbon Capture In oxy-combustion, another point-source carbon capture method, the separation process is moved further upstream and away from CO2 towards oxygen. ⚙ How it works: Air is processed to remove nitrogen and recover oxygen, which is used to combust fuel and produces high-purity CO2 when water vapor is condensed. ♻ Applications: Oxy-combustion can be applied to any heavy industrial process including next generation power plants and new types of cement or steel production. 💡 Opportunities: Oxy-combustion is a simple and elegant solution that leverage a mature technology in the form of Air Separation Units, which produce pure oxygen via cryogenic distillation. By removing nitrogen the system can be more compact and nitrous oxide emissions reduced. ⚠ Challenges: Fuel burns hot in pure oxygen, so hot that steps have to be taken to maintain practical temperatures. Typically the combustion products are recycled to control the temperature but this presents other technical problems and makes retrofits challenging. In addition, at a fundamental level separating oxygen from nitrogen is as hard, if not harder, than separating CO2 from nitrogen, resulting in higher energy consumption and costs. While Mantel specialize in post-combustion carbon capture, it is going to take all of these solutions to effect change, so keep checking back as we continue to share information about carbon capture to raise awareness. #Oxycombustion #carboncapture #CCUS #energy #industry

Pre-Combustion Carbon Capture Today, we’ll explore pre-combustion carbon capture which separates the CO2 before combustion occurs. Pre-combustion carbon capture has different names depending on the industry, such as Blue Hydrogen and gasification with carbon capture. ⚙ How it works:  Fuel is processed to remove carbon before combustion and recover hydrogen, which does not emit CO2 when combusted. The process is typically carried out at high pressure and has relatively high CO2 concentrations, 10-40% CO2. ♻ Applications: Pre-combustion carbon capture can decarbonize industries that use, or could use, hydrogen as a feedstock or fuel. These include power plants (e.g Integrated Gasification Combined Cycles), steel mills (e.g. Direct Reduction), and other pathway's that involve hydrogen as an energy carrier (e.g. Synthetic Fuels). 💡 Opportunities: Pre-combustion carbon capture offers potential cost and energy efficiency advantages over post-combustion methods because separating CO2 from hydrogen in a pre-combustion environment is inherently easier than separating CO2 from nitrogen post-combustion. Many capture technologies, including Mantel's, can be applied to both pre- and post- combustion. ⚠ Challenges: Pre-combustion systems are not easily retrofitted into existing facilities, and new constructions come with high capital costs. In addition, it is easier to transport and store carbon containing fuels than hydrogen which should be considered when deciding where to separate CO2 in the system. #precombustion #CCUS #carboncapture #industry #energy

Post-Combustion Carbon Capture Post-combustion carbon capture is one of the original forms of point source carbon capture technology and is the most widely explored. Today, we'll dive into post-combustion carbon capture as a separation process. ⚙ How it works: Flue gas, typically containing 4-20% CO2, is processed to separate and recover high-purity CO2 immediately after fuel combustion and before the CO2 enters the atmosphere. ♻ Applications: Post-combustion technology is crucial for decarbonizing conventional power plants and industrial facilities such as cement, steel, and other users of industrial heat. 💡 Opportunities: One of the key advantages of post-combustion carbon capture is its ability to be retrofitted into existing industrial facilities, making it widely applicable, quick to deploy, and minimally intrusive. ⚠ Challenges: Separating CO2 from the flue gas (predominately nitrogen) often demands high energy costs, impacting efficiency and increasing the cost of reducing emissions. Mantel's competitive edge lies in our effective solution to this challenge. #Postcombustion #CCUS #carboncapture #industry #energy
