How do you navigate the path to a successful outcome? At Fortune #BrainstormTech earlier this week, I had the pleasure of joining Jai Das, Jill (Greenberg) Chase, Renata Quintini, and Lisa Wu to talk about that quandary unicorns and the investors supporting them face. We at Madrona are here for the long run with our portfolio companies and are actively working with founders and teams to manage through this resetting of the public markets. #AI is one of the bright lights right now and was a big topic of conversation during our panel. The startups that build on top of these AI capabilities and deliver real value to customers will be the ones positioned for the next phase of the AI era. A lot of attention has been focused on large language models like OpenAI’s GPT and Google’s Gemini, but as I continue to say — the most important AI model is the business model! You can read more about my take on the AI business model here: https://lnkd.in/gUBaeFDE And check out Fortune's coverage of our panel here: https://lnkd.in/gE4zvVje Special thanks to Fortune’s Jessica Mathews, for moderating the discussion and to Leo Schwartz for the coverage. #venturecapital #FortuneBrainstormTech #GenAI #GenerativeAI #AppliedAI #BusinessModel #startups

We are moving toward a world where personalization and real-time recommendations are becoming critical to how companies engage with their users and customers, but building these systems is extremely difficult to orchestrate. We believe Shaped is leading this charge and will be the company to redefine the future of personalization, recommendations, and next-gen search in this AI era! How do you find a great sales leader?? In the rocky market we have had over the last 2 years many CEO's have asked that question. But it honestly starts with doing some work up front to make sure you look for the right profile and experience as well as ask the right questions. Loren Alhadeff and I just hosted a go-to-market AMA session with a group of Madrona portfolio CEOs to help them answer this question. See the highlights in the attached document. But a few key ones... - Don't hire people who have not been through your stage of growth. They need to understand how to get you from where you are to the next level. - Do they know how to build a team or just manage one? - What sales motion are they experienced with? If their prior companies were primarily inbound sales and you need outbound prospecting motions that may not be the right fit. One of the best pieces of advice I received was hire slow and fire fast. Hard to do but is the right answer - every time:)
