Lwala is excited to be partnering with the GE HealthCare Foundation to expand access to ultrasounds in Kenya. There's "a real missed opportunity to screen for high-risk conditions and to be able to save the lives of mothers and babies,” says Lwala Co-CEO Ash Rogers. Through this initiative, we are equipping healthcare workers in Migori County with the skills to perform ultrasounds, helping to identify high-risk pregnancies early. “Our ambition is to test this model, learn lessons to inform implementation, and then scale it up more broadly." We are in an all-out effort to reduce maternal and child mortality
About us
We match community innovation with university-backed research and evaluation to drive significant improvements in health. Lwala is a community-led innovator and non-profit operating in rural Kenya. We were founded by a group of community members facing the dual crisis of HIV and maternal mortality, who organized to build their region’s first health clinic and then engaged the research prowess of Vanderbilt University to rigorously measure its interventions. Today, Lwala is much more than a hospital; it is a community-led health model making dramatic improvements in maternal and child health, including a 64% reduction in child mortality, a 98% facility delivery rate, and a 300% increase in contraceptive uptake. The success of Lwala’s community-led health model has driven us to reject the notion that grassroots health initiatives are not scalable. Indeed, these local interventions can transform systems of inequity by leveraging the latent capacity of vulnerable communities. Because of this, we believe bottom-up solutions are uniquely positioned for scale.

We're so proud to be part of this significant 🌟 milestone in Community Health! 🌟 By equipping CHWs with the knowledge and skills to effectively manage health supplies at the community level, we are enhancing access to essential healthcare for everyone!
Empowering Kenyan CHWs: New Supply Chain Training Launched! We're thrilled to announce that for the first time, CHWs across Kenya will now receive training on supply chain as part of their routine training package. Previously, CHWs lacked formal training on managing health commodities, so VillageReach worked closely with CHU4UHC partners and the Kenyan MoH to develop a curriculum module on CHW supply chain management. Thanks to these efforts, CHWs will now be equipped with the knowledge and skills to effectively manage essential health care supplies at the community level. This initiative strengthens health care delivery in Kenyan communities, ensuring better access to healthcare for all. We're thrilled to partner with GE HealthCare 𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 to tackle maternal mortality in Migori County, Kenya! By providing vital obstetric ultrasound training and equipment, we're ensuring more women receive essential prenatal care. Together, we can restore trust in local healthcare systems and improve maternal health outcomes. “When people reach a facility that cannot provide high-quality, dignified care, it further harms the trust communities have in health systems. As a result, households delay seeking care and face many barriers to quality service when they do reach a health facility,” says Lwala's Co-CEO Ash Rogers. "A holistic approach combining tech, training, and advocacy is key for sustainable healthcare improvements." Join us in our mission to create a world where every mother and baby receive the care they deserve. Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/dwBCgF8B

Community health workers are the backbone of responsive primary health care systems, but globally are stocked out of medicines out-third of the time. To improve the successful development and implementation of supply chain digital tools for CHWs, a group of donors, government representatives, technical partners and private sector digital companies with expertise and experience working in Africa collaborated to develop guidance for those developing tools. This guidance can help countries enhance CHWs’ ability to serve their communities through effective and impactful digital solutions to ensure people everywhere have access to health products when and where they are needed. Exciting insights from our participation in last month's 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴, bringing together 51 passionate Co-Impact's partners driving systems change initiatives across Africa! Moderated by Taaka Awori of Busara Africa and supported by Robert Akoto Amoafo (He/Him/His), the event was an engaging platform to explore ways to strengthen our collective impact and and drive impactful change. Key takeaways from the discussions included: 1) The power of building strong coalitions and collaborations, and the art of power mapping and analysis in driving real change. 2) The delicate balance between advocacy and accountability in our interactions with governments, which is crucial for driving impactful change. 3) The necessity of political acumen and skills in navigating the politics of progression. 4) A systemic change mindset is vital for building strong partnerships. In healthcare, collaboration and synergy are essential for achieving meaningful impact. We look forward to future engagements!

Founder & CEO of Busara Africa | Leadership Trainer | Certified Coach | Organisational Development Specialist | Facilitator | Speaker
I can’t believe it’s already been a week, since Busara Africa convened in Naivasha, Kenya, 51 participants from partners of Co-Impact who are implementing systems change initiatives across 8 countries in Africa. The event was the first in-person convening of a Community of Practice recently established for the partners to share knowledge, collaborate and conduct peer learning on systems change. Reflecting on the convening, Gita, one of the participants from South Africa stated: "This workshop reactivated my passion. Being here, I realise I am more than just an activist; true change starts from within. We must be open and truthful." Aminu from Nigeria added, "I wondered if the others [who had successfully implemented system change initiatives] were human beings. They went through so much. Now, I know we can also overcome our challenges." Thank you to all the partners who joined us for this significant convening and participated so actively in the learning and sharing on systems change. If Naivasha is anything to go by, I believe this Community of Practice is going to be a vibrant and inspiring learning and collaborative space. The Busara Africa team and I are honored to be of service to you all in this journey. #AfricaSystemsChange #CommunityOfPractice #BusaraAfrica Rakesh Rajani Zaheera Mohamed Grace Matlhape Sharmi Surianarain Ibrahim-Tanko Amidu Dr Abraham Rugo Muriu Abraham Ochieng' Gillian Atuheire Maria Omare Caroline Kisia Anna Sawaki Lucille Aba Afransema Abruquah (Ph.D) John Mugo Iheoma Obibi Muka Mweemba Lisa Achien'g Odhiambo Nondumiso Mbambo - (Admitted Attorney) Joyce Wanderi - Maina Julius Mbeya Kenneth Ogendo Jabes Otieno MScHEP isaac nyampong Eunice Racheal Agbenyadzi Evelyn Samba Mwaita Vitalis Mukhebi Nicola Okero VIRGINIA NGINDIRU Mary Wandia Wanjiru Abe Grindle Jackson Otieno Gladys Onyango Varja Lipovsek Nguhi Mwaura

New The Bridgespan Group research shows that despite operating in an environment of funding scarcity and uncertainty, many African NGOs are growing, innovating, and delivering powerful impact in the continent. “I am a big advocate for unrestricted funding,” says Lwala Co-CEO Julius Mbeya, “Funding that focuses only on achieving specific outputs may help with the immediate problem, but it doesn’t build an organization that’s going to grow and provide long-term solutions. You see over and over again that organizations that have been able to define their own pathways are the ones that drive change globally.” Lwala has been fortunate to receive flexible funding through funders such as those in Big Bang Philanthropy (a donor collaborative comprising private and corporate funders) and others.
