American Airlines reversal to restore miles earning through travel agents feels inevitable and avoidable. It is easy to understand the rationale, which is also commonly pursued by hotel programs where booking direct gets rewarded, and via travel agents does not. But in my view it should not be administered as a binary, blunt instrument. Loyalty programs enable quality data to be captured on customers, for airlines and hotels to individualize incentives driving positive behaviours and monetize these data into huge corporate assets. So why not provide more rewards to book direct, but don't cast customers through alternate distribution channels into the lost, unidentified wilderness, keep them in the fold of the loyalty program. So differentiate the reward rates but continue to nurture a relationship. And the best way to persuade a customer to change channels is to know them and encourage them rather than try to rip away the comfort blanket entirely. In short, loyalty programs can support and enhance channel strategy and push other positive behaviours in the airlines' and hotels' agenda. But ideally not through exclusion but via varying the incentive. In this way you retain the enormously powerful data collection and targeted marketing capability a loyalty program offers to the maximum audience to drive the most value. #nextgenloyalty #urbanleopardventures #loyaltyconnectOS #FFP #loyaltyprograms https://lnkd.in/gJ3MGjEY

The Bilt Rewards and Wells Fargo cobrand story is a very interesting one. On the face of it Wells Fargo seem to be getting a raw deal allegedly funding $10 million per month. The challenge they face is customers are optimizing their personal card portfolio, taking the points and rewards on rent payments, satisfying the 5 transactions per month criteria required with relatively small spends and paying off their balances. According to the The Wall Street Journal and Business Insider articles the result is only 35% of spend happens outside rent payments. The 35% is the only revenue generating portion for the bank through interchange resulting in a financially challenged portfolio. Compare this to an airline card where perhaps 90% of spend happens in the general market and 10% on the airline which all attracts interchange fees for the bank. Another reported challenge is that people stop renting and purchase properties making the Bilt Rewards and Wells Fargo credit card proposition no longer valid. Despite this wave of negative reality, I still see the arrangement as worthy of investment by Wells Fargo. Provided they can take a medium term lifecycle view, cross-sell new products at the right time and in the meantime stimulate more spend outside of rent by building out the customer value proposition. The profile of the cardholders is relatively affluent, young professionals who are not ideal customers to make a profitable credit card portfolio, but are sensational as the basis for a whole of bank customer portfolio with a home loan, car loan, investments, insurance and other product needs as they progress from renter to home owner. So I hope that the wonderful Bilt Rewards proposition and Wells Fargo can navigate their way through these choppy waters and realize long term value generation for the bank from this investment in the future high-value customer base they are engaging together. #urbanleopardventures #nextgenloyalty #cobrandcards #creditcards #loyaltyconnectos https://lnkd.in/d8xzQKDd
