Celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Edith Farnsworth House being opened to the public last evening at a special event held at IIT's Crown Hall, Dirk Lohan, FAIA was also recognized and honored for his stewardship to preserve the iconic piece of architecture designed by Mies van der Rohe. Now that the Bears have put their plans on the table, it is fair to give the taxpayers an opportunity to see the alternative: a design from architect Dirk Lohan, who was the responsible architect for the 2003 Soldier Field renovation and expansion as well as the Masterplan of the Museum Campus. These drawings suggest adding to the existing stadium a translucent lightweight domed roof, 20,000 additional spectator seats, and new amenities including dining and an interactive Bears Museum. Dirk Lohan and Thorton Tomasetti’s Joseph Burns, the structural engineer on record for the Soldier Field and Wrigley Field renovations, jointly developed a plan to locate on the outside of the stadium 4 columns to support the roof without obstructing spectator views. The reconstruction they propose would create a sustainable, state-of-the-art stadium that would give the Bears the facilities they need today. Moreover, it would create a venue fit to host the Super Bowl, the FIFA World Cup, and great entertainment events that would attract millions of visitors and bring revenue to local businesses. Under Dirk Lohan’s plan, the stadium would remain integrated with the park and the World War I Memorial, remaining true to the values reflected in the Burnham and Bennett Plans and the Chicago Lakefront Ordinance. Our group enjoyed an outing to the Chicago Architecture Film Festival over the weekend where a new dramatized film "The Mies van der Rohes" debuted, featuring recollections of one of Mies' daughters. A talk-back after the film featured an interview with the filmmaker, Sabine Gisiger, and Dirk, who shared later family history from the time when he worked closely with his grandfather, Mies. #lohanarchitecture #chicago #architecture #mies #chicagoarchitecturecenter

Return clients are the best! We are in the bidding stage now on renovations at the Des Plaines Public Library, originally built in 2000. This current project is to introduce a multipurpose / makerspace area on the 4th floor. We look forward to it becoming reality early next year!
