Building Community | Inspiring Readers | Expanding Book Access for All
About us
Little Free Library is a nonprofit organization that inspires readers, builds community, and expands book access for all through a global network of volunteer-led little libraries. Through Little Free Libraries, millions of books are shared each year, profoundly increasing access to books for readers of all ages and backgrounds. There are more than 150,000 registered Little Free Library book exchanges worldwide, found in 50 states, 120 countries, and on all 7 continents. Our vision is a Little Free Library in every community and a book for every reader. We believe all people are empowered when the opportunity to discover a personally relevant book to read is not limited by time, space, or privilege. The Little Free Library nonprofit received the World Literacy Award and has been honored by the Library of Congress, the National Book Foundation, Library Journal, the Women's National Book Association, and others.

From the U.S. Department of Education and Matt Nosanchuk: Book bans are not just bad policy. They can raise civil rights issues. https://lnkd.in/gwgCXtA8? "If a school prohibits its students from reading age-appropriate books by or about LGBTQI+ people, people of color, or people who share ancestry—such as Jewish, Muslim, Arab, and Sikh people—students may feel stigmatized, unwelcome, unsafe, or isolated at school. They may also face increased risk of harassment by school staff or their peers who associate them or their families with the books targeted for restriction. Circumstances such as these could give rise to a hostile environment for students at school, in violation of federal civil rights law." I'm proud to work at Little Free Library, where we build community, inspire readers, and expand access to books—including banned books! This month, we were thrilled to grant 29 Little Free Library boxes full of books through our Impact Library Program, which serves under-resourced communities. We also heard from stewards who were previously granted libraries and wanted to share their stories. Susan S. of Huntsville, Alabama, says: "This neighborhood is 'land locked' — surrounded on four sides by major, very busy roads, which limits the range of neighborhood children or even adults who lack transportation. My street is a common shortcut to a nearby row of stores bordering one of those main thoroughfares, so there is a good bit of foot and bike traffic in front of my house, year-round. It’s also a Title 1 neighborhood, with a nearby elementary school that has some of the lowest reading scores in the area. So we need a library!" “On the sides of the [Little Free Library], there are spines of classic books from Banned Book lists, and I try to keep banned books in the LFL as often as possible. When I was a kid 1000 years ago, reading was a critical part of my life, but I was also lucky that I lived just blocks from the town library. My hope for this Little Free Library is that even one child in the neighborhood discovers it as a resource and gets lit up about all the worlds available to them in between the covers of a book. If this can light that kind of reading passion in just one child, then I will call my LFL a lifetime success.” #bookaccess #books #bannedbooks #equity #community

Thank you, Popular Science and Justin Pot for speaking with me about the Little Free Library community! https://lnkd.in/e7yzsadC “When we talk to Little Free Library stewards, 72 percent say they’ve met more neighbors because of their Little Free Library and 98 percent of people say their neighborhood feels like a friendlier place because of a Little Free Library.” It's easy to be part of the LFL fam, whether you're a steward with your own Little Free Library; a patron who takes and shares books; a user of our mobile app; a member of our volunteer initiative, Team LFL; or a donor who supports our nonprofit's mission to create equitable book access. We hope you join us in whatever way fits you best! #books #bookaccess #neighborhoods #community #littlefreelibrary #littlefreelibraries
