In my career, I’ve only had women supervisors/bosses. When I (VERY hesitantly) came to the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce with LEAD San Diego in 2017, I didn’t know at the time that I would work for one of the greatest supervisors I could have ever asked for. Elizabeth Wilberg Fitzsimons’ patience, understanding, mindfulness, and kindness helped me to settle in and, under her leadership, I grew - both personally and professionally - more than I could have imagined. We did some amazing work together and I am so proud of what we accomplished as a team. Thank you, Elizabeth, for sharing your words of wisdom with the Advance Class of 2024. You truly are the epitome of servant leader. ❤️
Advance Session 2!✨ Today, our 2024 Advance cohort heard from two incredible women making a difference in the San Diego region. Erica Alcantara Aros, PhD, Director of Employee Engagement for the Division of Student Affairs at San Diego State University, presented on ‘Making the Most of Your Mentorship’, preparing the class to be introduced to their Advance mentors. CEO of Episcopal Community Services and former VP of LEAD San Diego, Elizabeth Wilberg Fitzsimons, shared her personal story in becoming an influential individual championing equity, opportunity, and possibilty. A special thanks to loyal LEAD supporter, Amanda Flisher, for leading today’s class!

Recently, I graduated from the LEAD San Diego Impact program and was honored with the Herbert G. Klein Memorial Award. Sharing this journey with my cohorts, some of the city's brightest minds, was enlightening and inspiring. Additionally, I enjoyed collaborating with my Leadership Action Team and partnering with Black Entrepreneurs Leaders & Learners to produce a meaningful community service project. This morning, I shared my insights with the Board of Directors, reflecting on why I joined Lead and what I gained through the experience. Then, earlier this afternoon, I had a productive lunch with Enrique Meza, last year's HGK Award recipient, to share ideas and discuss community engagement opportunities. Reflecting on this experience, I've built meaningful connections and learned more about the San Diego business community. Thank you, Episcopal Community Services, for this opportunity and to everyone who supported me through this endeavor. I will continue serving the San Diego community with PRIDE!

🎓Meet the Grad! Mark Sanchez, Ed.D. (Influence '21) Superintendent/President of Southwestern Community College District . "LEAD was an amazing experience for me as a returning professional in the San Diego Region. I'm a native San Diegan yet had not lived in the region for over 20 years. LEAD allowed me to learn about all the amazing work being done in our region to create an inclusive ecosystem for all people in our community. Networking and building relationships with other world class leaders was an important piece of my work as a college CEO."

This. Right. Here. Congrats to Michael Hopkins and excited for my friend and LEAD San Diego Influence classmate Dana Toppel!
Today, JFS Board Chair, Deborah Bucksbaum Maio, announced at JFS’s annual meeting that after 13 years at the helm of JFS, Michael Hopkins will be retiring one year from now, on June 30, 2025. After a thorough and diligent succession planning process, JFS’s Board selected Dana Toppel, JFS’s COO, as the incoming CEO. Michael’s many accomplishments include expanding the JFS headquarters in Kearny Mesa to create the Joan & Irwin Jacobs Campus, enabling JFS to increase and centralize services; the creation of the Center for Jewish Care that assists community members who are experiencing trauma, grief, or financial challenges; facilitating JFS’s leadership in the creation of the San Diego Rapid Response Network and its Migrant Shelter Services for people seeking asylum that JFS operates—now regarded as a national model; and leading our nonprofit through our Centennial Celebration and Endowment Campaign, to sustain the future of the organization. During Dana’s 15-year tenure with JFS, she has served as the Director for Older Adults, Divisional Director for Clinical and Educational Services, Chief Program Officer, and for the past nine years, as Chief Operating Officer. Dana has played a crucial role in JFS’s strategic planning, navigated the organization through the COVID-19 pandemic while expanding critical services for the community to record levels, and has provided the vision and leadership for the nonprofit’s guaranteed income pilot programs, helping families achieve economic security through unrestricted cash assistance. Dana has also been an integral part of JFS’s Safe Parking Program, now offering six safe parking lots for people living out of their vehicles to pursue more stable housing. Together, both Michael and Dana will work to ensure a seamless transition over the next year as we keep JFS and our community, Moving Forward Together. #CEO #community #JewishCommunity #leadership #movingforward #strongertogether
