Water is a critical input for all crops, but especially rice🌾. This video was recently taken by one of our farm managers on a LandFund furrow irrigated rice farm. Pictured in the video is a roll of polypipe filled with water, which is being pumped by a nearby ground well. Farmers make punctures in the polypipe at different intervals, allowing the abundant groundwater to flow out of the pipe and irrigate the surrounding field. LandFund’s farmland portfolio is 90% irrigated by over 300 wells. The Mid-South’s groundwater resources are driving more and more domestic production of crops to the region, and rice farmers are one of the main beneficiaries of this trend.

It is an exciting time of year on the LandFund farms as planting is underway. Pictured below is what no-till planting actually looks like. In the photo you can see young soybean plants emerging from the same beds that last year’s corn crop grew on. Corn stalk 🌽 residue is still visible as its organic matter is gradually being absorbed by the soil. We have been successfully using regenerative farming practices on our farms for the past 3-4 years and are seeing the financial and environmental benefits of our collective effort. We continue to be dedicated stewards of the land as we work in partnership with our farm operators to restore and enhance soil health over time. 🌱 #SustainableAgriculture #RegenerativeAgriculture #Farming

One of the most visible ways to tell if a farm is adopting regenerative practices is to see green this time of year. Cover crops like radishes, cereal rye, and clover create a green blanket on the farms during the winter months. This allows the root systems of the cover crop to break up the soil and enrich it with more organic matter. As the cover crop breathes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, the roots deposit carbon in the soil making it more productive and working to restore the soil to its natural health. The below photo shows cereal rye growing on a LandFund farm in Phillips County, AR. Have you noticed farms in your area being green this time of year? Do you cover crop on your farms? What other regenerative practices are you interested in learning about? Feel free to comment below.
