Billionaire Investor Jeremy Grantham: "We are skating on thin ice, and no one talks about that. We have eroded 90% of our safety margin. We have sufficient soil in the great growing areas, but we only have an inch or two extra where we used to have a foot or so extra, so our safety margin has been used up, and we are losing it at about 1% a year. Depending on where you are, we only have 40 to 70 years of good agriculture left if you do it this way. We have to change the way we do agriculture." https://lnkd.in/ger3purV The Investor's Podcast Network GMO #JeremyGrantham #organic #regenerative #farming

🎤 New podcast with UBS' Jason Draho on the possibility of another Roaring '20s for the US https://lnkd.in/gzFz3U6w We covered: -- The resilience of the US economy -- Macro regime change -- 4 megatrends he's focused on: capex boom, green energy transition, AI, and security & deglobalization 💬 Some key quotes from Jason: 🔹"I think ... a lot of investors have been dragged, not kicking and screaming, but in disbelief that the economy has done as well as it has." 🔹 "there's been essentially a positive aggregate demand shock to the economy, massive stimulus. And we can debate ... whether that's good or not, but what it did do is take us out of an environment for basically a decade post-financial crisis in '08 where it was just lower for a longer regime." 🔹 "...bonds aren't a negative asset class, but they're just not the ideal asset class that they were for so long. So, I think that means you need to think about other things to add to your portfolio." 🔹 "...to me this deglobalization idea sounds like a catchy buzzword. I think in practical matters, I'm much more skeptical that we're really going to somehow retrench after 40 years of moving in that direction." Thanks to our sponsor Farmland LP

🫒 The price of olive oil has doubled over the past two years as hot weather and drought have baked olive groves around the Mediterranean. 🍫 Heat waves and untimely rain in West Africa have sent cocoa prices to record levels this year. ☕ Traders are hoarding coffee after a severe drought in Vietnam, the world’s second-largest producer, pushing prices of the Robusta variety to a 45-year high. Extreme weather events, including heat waves, droughts, and untimely rains, lead to reduced yields and increased prices for key agricultural commodities such as wine, olive oil, coffee, and cocoa. This The Wall Street Journal article from Jon Emont highlights how weather and climate reshape global agriculture and drive up prices. Farmers are battling extreme weather, and traditional growing regions need help to adapt. At Farmland LP, we are acutely aware of the need to invest in sustainable, regenerative farming practices. These practices are not just about weathering climate disruptions, but about building resilience against them. For more insights, we invite you to read our latest article in the Green Money Journal, which delves into the impact of weather and climate on Napa cabernet, Florida oranges, Georgia peaches, and Washington apples: https://lnkd.in/gjUJgWBQ

You can take the farmer off the farm, but you can't take the farm out of the farmer. I had a great time at Farmland LP's investor day yesterday in Stockton, CA, along with my Dad (a farmer and an agriculturist). It was a welcome change of pace from the world gone blue with AI mania. We picked and tasted organic blueberries and learned how the West Coast of the Americas, from British Columbia to Mexico, serves the insatiable demand for organic blueberries in the US and Canada. Apparently, the demand is outstripping supply by 2 million pounds per week. Farmland LP is the largest manager of farmland as an asset class and makes investments to take advantage of this type of supply/demand imbalance for organic food through investments like the farm we visited. I have been an investor for a few years. Growing up, I spent my school holidays roaming around in and helping at our family farm in Punjab, India. Even though I make my living in the Business of Tech now, visiting a farm always feels like home. Wherever I have lived in the recent past—the American West, New England, or the MidWest—I make it a point to visit often and enough. These visits keep the latent desire of the farmer in me to get back on the farm, hopefully someday, even if for part of my time 🙂. Because even if AI puts us out of work, as the pundits argue, we will still need to eat. #personal #sustainability #investing P.S. The pundits are wrong! 😉

Ensuring food security is a fundamental role of the government. When crop failures occur, it's crucial to support farmers to keep them in business. However, creating demand subsidies, such as converting corn into ethanol, also brings challenges.
