Revolutionizing the Way Structures are Designed and Built.

About us

KL&A Inc, Engineers and Builders is a unique firm built around the fundamental idea that structural engineers can and should return to a master builder role, taking ownership not only of design of structural systems, but also cost estimating and at-risk construction. We took the first step by building, alongside our staff of structural engineers, an in-house staff of steel detailers. Using 3D modeling software developed for steel fabricators, we found ourselves on the cutting edge of construction-grade BIM modeling before the term “BIM” existed. We have since built a company with bonding capability, and a track record of successful construction projects in which the same design engineering team carries the project through estimating, detailing, fabrication and erection of structural steel. There is no faster or more reliable process for steel construction than our integrated approach. Our philosophy of personal responsibility has generated a corporate atmosphere of problem solving that embraces scopes of work that other structural engineers might be unable to serve. At the same time, our approach to steel design and construction has informed and energized our work in many other areas, including reinforced and post-tensioned concrete, heavy timber, multi-story stick frame, and masonry design, as well as emerging materials such as rammed earth, structural insulating panels, and structural glass. High design architects have responded with enthusiasm to our creative spirit, backed by engineering fundamentals and virtual building tools, as have designers of industrial structures and all manner of building types, urban and mountain, low or high budget. Founded in 1994, KL&A is the second largest structural firm in Colorado, with four offices in Colorado and Wyoming. We have been voted one of the top structural engineering firms to work for in the U.S. since 2006.

  • Please join KL&A's Greg Kingsley and AIA Utah on July 16th for a webinar on An Intro to Mass Wood and Cross Laminated Timber. This presentation will introduce CLT with information on manufacturing, specification and code-related considerations, and how it can be used as an alternative to concrete, masonry and steel in many building types. For more information and to register for the event, please visit: https://lnkd.in/gnX-rkh6

  • As KL&A celebrates its 30th Anniversary in 2024, we are looking back and highlighting 30 influential projects in our history. In collaboration with Colorado Village Collaborative, The Women’s Tiny Village at Clara Brown Commons features fourteen relocatable tiny homes. Traditionally in the unhoused community, the attitude is to get yourself cleaned up and then get a house, the idea of this project is to flip that, give a home to get themselves together. These wood framed tiny homes are big enough to fit one person and were designed to be moved from site to site to allow multiple homeless people to live in these spaces. Because they are designed to be moveable, they don’t have a traditional foundation system, instead these homes are basically on stilts and able to be put on forklifts. This design required a lot of research on trailer homes and non-standard foundation systems. Everything in this project was donated, KL&A provided pro bono design and detailing services, SAR+ and Whiting Turner donated their services, all materials were also donated with high school students from Cherry Creek Innovation Campus constructing the homes. Giving back to our community and making a difference with built structures are two pillars of KL&A’s culture. This project is influential for the opportunity given to collaborate with trusted partners and being a part of the solution to the homelessness crisis in Colorado. Working with high school students was inspiring, to see them build something that is normally built by adult professionals, and to directly impart wisdom onto them while teaching how they can give back to their community. We are proud to have been a part of this project and hope to be a part of the replicated models into other communities outside of Denver. Project Team: SAR+ Architects , KL&A Engineers and Builders, The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company

  • Join Chris Kendall at the Mass Timber Group Summit as he speaks about Mass Timber in Multi Family Buildings. In this seminar, you will learn the impact of construction type selection, building height limitations, and associated fire resistance ratings; what multi-family programs and geometries are a good match for mass timber, and the challenges with routing MEP systems and acoustic performance. • As KL&A celebrates its 30th Anniversary in 2024, we are looking back and highlighting 30 influential projects in our history. Denver Water’s civic campus was designed to effect change for smart water use and bring them closer to the vision of becoming the nation’s number one water utility. The Denver Water Administration Building serves as the heart of the campus, linking eight new and renovated facilities, including a new warehouse, meter shop, trades, and fleet buildings, all designed and constructed by this project team. The administration building is 187,000 sf, embodying the One Water initiative, Denver Water’s holistic plan for water efficiency and reuse that promotes the right water source for the right use. The design strategy involves onsite wastewater treatment and recycling for toilet flushing and irrigation purposes, through an extensive system of internal planter beds and external landscaping that serve double duty as both systems infrastructure and key biophilic elements. This award-winning project is influential to KL&A as it speaks to our ability to design an iconic building that truly meets the owner’s goals for the function & cost of the building. Collaboration has always been a key to KL&A’s success on projects – this project specifically had multiple teams working together to bring the owner’s goals of a Net Zero Energy and LEED Platinum certified building to the forefront. Denver Water’s sustainable features include onsite solar, the country’s first radiant slab powered by the complex’s central utility plant, a high-efficiency triple pane-glazed window system, and biophilic design. As you drive on I-25, it’s easy to spot this iconic building that is emblematic of what Denver Water stands for, a sustainable building that gives back to its community with its inhabitants working every day to meet a necessary need for our city. • KL&A's Greg Kingsley was featured on CBS News Colorado earlier this week to discuss the future of Mass Timber buildings in the city and county of Denver, and the country! The segment also features Shiling Pei's mass timber shake table, which tested a 10 story mass timber building against multiple earthquake simulations. Greg Kingsley then discusses the appeal of mass timber buildings inside the KL&A designed Burwell Center for Career Achievement on the University of Denver's campus. The use of renewable materials and the speed of mass timber construction has grown Denver to be ahead of nearly every other city in the country when it comes to mass timber buildings.
