Although Juneteenth has only been a federal holiday since 2021, the origin of the holiday traces back to Galveston, Texas, the westernmost part of the Union in 1865. On June 19, 1865, enslaved people in Galveston were informed of their emancipation, although they had technically been freed two and a half years earlier when President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863. However, slaveholders in Texas had withheld this crucial information, prolonging the period of violent exploitation of enslaved African Americans. The following year, in 1866, Texas saw the first Juneteenth celebration, marking the initial observance of freedom from slavery in the U.S. This photograph shows an Emancipation Day celebration in Richmond, VA, in 1905, 40 years after the war ended.
