"Business as usual" no longer fits with a world where planning for a low carbon, sustainable future creates greater enterprise value. That's why businesses need to effectively communicate their #sustainability story. Richard Barker, PhD, of the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) and Professor, Saïd Business School, University of Oxford, recounts the rise in sustainability #reporting. Should every job be a climate job? I was honored to speak at the recent American Society for Engineering Education conference at the invitation of The Lemelson Foundation and Engineering for One Planet. This was my response ⤵️ It can be. It should be. My vision is it is. We’re not there yet, but I think it starts with people seeing beyond just their job descriptions and understanding how they can help in their own way, in their community, within their job, outside of their job, whatever that is. Everybody taking responsibility for their planet as a whole. And that comes with education and understanding. Do you agree? Thank you to Cindy Pereira Cooper for organizing this panel and Joel Clement for masterfully moderating our conversation. And to my fellow panelists, Jim Hanna, Roth Chan, J'reyesha Brannon, P.E., and Sri Yeswanth (Yash) Tadimalla (He/Him) - thank you for the impact you are making in your careers and for sharing your insights in Portland! IS EVERY JOB A CLIMATE JOB? A session, "When Every Job is a Climate Job: The Role of Engineering Education," at this week's American Society for Engineering Education #ASEEAnnual Conference explored this key question. Moderated by The Lemelson Foundation's Senior Program Officer, Joel Clement, panelists Michelle Benavides (International Society of Sustainability Professionals), Roth Chan (Siemens), J'reyesha Brannon, P.E. (City of Portland), Jim Hanna, and Sri Yeswanth (Yash) Tadimalla (He/Him) (University of North Carolina at Charlotte) engaged in a lively discussion on the powerful synergy between #STEMeducation and #sustainability. Panelists emphasized the critical role of translating sustainability into a language that resonates with businesses. The conversation also delved into the importance of data-driven approaches with Roth Chan stressing the need for "KPIs built in... those pieces that you can take where everybody is on the same page and moving towards the same goal." Among the highlights was when panelists underscored the power of collaboration, with Michelle Benavides emphasizing the need for a "common language" around sustainability and the importance of building networks. Michelle's comments echoed the sentiments of J'reyesha Brannon, P.E., an engineer who shared: "I have made it my goal in life to diversify the #STEM industry so that folks who are not typically at the table are there. A lot of infrastructure was built by folks who are not the direct users, and it’s time to change that. I want to see an engineering workforce that looks a little different, perhaps a little younger, a little bit more diverse and representative of all of our world’s people." When considering whether every job is a climate job, Michelle Benavides eloquently offered: "It can be. It should be. My vision is it is. We’re not there yet, but I think it starts with people seeing beyond just their job descriptions and how they can help in their own way, in their community, within their job, outside of their job, whatever that is. Everybody taking responsibility for their planet as a whole. And that comes with education and understanding." This session made clear that #EngineeringEducation can equip future engineers with the skills to design sustainable solutions and shift mindsets by highlighting the urgency of the climate crisis and the role of every engineer in addressing it.
