The seventy-eighth session of the Executive Council (EC78) was held in Geneva from 10 to 14 June 2024. Key outcomes included adopting an Early Warnings for All (EW4All) roadmap, an implementation plan for a Global Greenhouse Gas Watch, and increased action on the cryosphere amid significant changes. Resolutions on climate monitoring, climate services, research, and innovation were also adopted. Specifically, the Executive Council adopted a resolution to enhance youth engagement in the hydrometeorological community by developing a Youth Action Plan, aligning WMO with 55 other UN entities in implementing a UN Youth Strategy. The IEEE Young Professionals Climate and Sustainability Taskforce was proud to participate in this event, particularly contributing to the global effort to leverage resources towards the young scientists, and young practitioners in technology in the front line of addressing these most critical issues in our mother earth. Two important bilateral meetings were conducted by Yuhan (Sicily) Zheng with Roberta at the Energy Division under WMO (https://lnkd.in/ej9GS4d9), and also with the World Weather Research Program Team (https://lnkd.in/eD8NTmvh) in leveraging the collaboration into more concrete and project level.  #EC78 #WMO #ClimateAction #GreenhouseGasWatch #Cryosphere #YouthEngagement #UNYouthStrategy #IEEEYP #SustainableFuture #GlobalCollaboration #ClimateInnovation #EnergyTransition #WeatherResearch #YoungScientists #Hydrometeorology #ClimateMonitoring #TechForGood

We're thrilled to announce that AbdulHameed Raji will be representing IEEE Young Professionals Climate and Sustainability Taskforce (CSTF) at the COP29-IEA High-Level Energy Transition Dialogue, in London on June 24, 2024. This prestigious event, organized by the COP29 Presidency and the International Energy Agency (IEA), is a critical step towards global climate action. Taking place ahead of the COP29 climate summit in Baku, Azerbaijan, the dialogues are co-chaired by IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol and COP29 President-Designate Mukhtar Babayev, in close partnership with the UNFCCC Secretariat. These discussions are vital for building international consensus on driving energy sector emissions to net zero and limiting global warming to 1.5 °C. Hosted by the City of London Corporation at Mansion House during London Climate Action Week, the second dialogue will emphasize scaling up clean energy investments, particularly in emerging and developing economies. Key stakeholders from government, finance, and civil society will explore how to foster a robust pipeline of bankable clean energy projects and unlock the necessary funds to achieve our climate goals. #COP29 #EnergyTransition #Sustainability #IEEE #IEEEYoungProfessionals #ClimateAction #CleanEnergy #NetZero #ClimateLeadership

🌍🔅 COP29 – IEA High-Level Energy Transition Dialogue 🔅🌍 On May 15, 2024, at the International Energy Agency (IEA) Headquarters in Paris, the first COP29 High-Level Energy Transition Dialogue emphasized urgent actions to meet the 1.5°C climate target. Key discussions focused on aligning Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) with this target, ensuring transparent reporting, and strengthening global financial institutions. Key Points: ✔ Slow rise in energy sector emissions, with a significant shift towards electric vehicles in transportation. ✔ Emphasis on faster deployment of emission reduction strategies, well-designed policies, and increased financial support for energy transitions. ✔ Major financial commitments discussed, with a call for $2 trillion in global finance to address climate issues, especially in the global south. ✔ Specific focus on Africa's need for carbon financing and leveraging private financing. ✔ Importance of skilled workers, robust social protection systems, and ensuring worker safety in the clean energy transition. We were thrilled to participate as IEEE Young Professionals alongside the SDG7 Youth Constituency. These dialogues underscore the critical steps needed to implement climate pledges and advance global energy transitions. Simon Stiell from the UNFCCC Secretariat called for faster deployment of emission reduction strategies, increased financial support for energy transitions, and new NDCs. Financial commitments were a major focus, with notable contributions from Germany, Africa, and other regions. The summit also highlighted the importance of skilled workers, robust social protection systems, and ensuring worker safety in the clean energy transition. We look forward to continuing our efforts in advancing global energy transitions. 🌍🔅 #COP29 #IEA #ClimateAction #EnergyTransition #IEEEYoungProfessionals #Sustainability #CleanEnergy

The IEEE Young Professionals Climate and Sustainability Taskforce members participated in the International Energy Agency (IEA) Clean Cooking Summit held at UNESCO Headquarters, Paris, on May 14, 2024. This historic event addressed the ongoing issue of clean cooking, which poses health, environmental, and climate threats across the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. The summit brought together over 60 countries and more than 1000 delegates to address clean cooking access for over 1 billion people in Africa, emphasizing the need for urgent action. Key points from the summit include: - The critical role of clean cooking in ensuring human dignity and environmental protection. - The potential to save 200 million hectares of land annually. - The need for a $4 billion annual investment over six years to achieve universal clean cooking access by 2030. - The importance of bridging the gender gap, as women bear the burden of collecting wood for cooking, leading to high mortality rates among women and children. - The summit highlighted that cooking activities contribute to 50% of human-generated black carbon emissions. Leaders, including Fatih Birol of the IEA, and representatives from various nations and organizations, stressed the importance of immediate implementation of available solutions. Norway's Prime Minister committed $50 million, and the African Development Bank pledged $2 billion to clean cooking projects. The IEA will rigorously track and ensure the fulfillment of these commitments with a "double-lock system" to maintain momentum and attract new partners and funds. The summit also saw over 100 entities endorsing The Clean Cooking Declaration, reaffirming their commitment to making clean cooking a priority. Examples from Brazil, India, and Indonesia showcased that rapid progress is possible with strong political will. The IEEE YP CSTF was proud to be part of this event, contributing to the global effort to address this pressing issue. #IEEE #IEEEYoungProfessionals #IEA #CleanCooking #ClimateChange
