A great post by OEB IAS Chair, Michael N. on the benefits of being an IEEE member. And, many thanks to SCV PES/IAS Joint Chapter Chair Steve Jordan for his leadership and dedication in keeping the PES/IAS Joint Chapter active in IEEE Santa Clara Valley Section.
Why IEEE? I was recently elected Chair of the IEEE Industry Applications Society (IAS) Oakland East Bay chapter, having previously served as Chair from 2012 through 2015. The decision to return to a leadership role in my local chapter was prompted by my reflection on the question, “Why IEEE?” I have been a member of IEEE for 36 years continuously, choosing to pay the dues even when my employer would not. I joined IEEE in my early college years and helped resurrect the student chapter of PES. I have volunteered in officer positions for the local IAS and PES chapters. I have volunteered for the IEEE IAS Electrical Safety Workshop Technical Program Committee and the IEEE IAS PCIC Local Committee. But my greatest satisfaction has come from volunteering for the local chapters. The pandemic negatively impacted IEEE local chapters. At first, we tried to carry on by holding virtual meetings over WebEx. Slowly we tried to hold in-person meetings. However, regular attendees never returned. Ultimately, we decided to take the chapter dormant for some time while the volunteer officers strategized on how to rebuild. Other chapters in the greater SF Bay Area continue to struggle as well. It seems that IEEE is at an inflection point. Either we all double down effort to rebuild, or we watch it wither away. Why IEEE? According to IEEE, when you join IEEE, you: - Join a community of over 420,000 technology and engineering professionals united by a common desire to continuously learn, interact, collaborate, and innovate - Get the resources and opportunities you need to keep on top of changes in technology - Get involved in standards development - Network with other professionals in your local area or within a specific technical interest - Mentor the next generation of engineers and technologists While it sounds cliché, I can honestly say that I get out of IEEE what I put in. By actively participating in IEEE, I: - Improve presentation skills - Improve leadership skills - Meet end users, consultants, manufacturers, and other professionals - Learn about emerging trends and issues within the profession - Mentor young professionals and assist with job placement - Develop and foster friendships If you are still reading (thank you), I challenge you to recommit to IEEE. Find your local chapter and get involved. Initially, just show up and meet new people. Learn. Develop friendships. And finally, volunteer to help lead a chapter. Lastly, I would like to give a shout-out to Steve Jordan who is Chair of the PES/IAS Santa Clara Valley chapter. If you live or work in the Silicon Valley, check out their meetings as Steve keeps that chapter active with informative presentations. #IEEE #IAS #PES #PCIC #electricalsafetyworkshop #volunteer
