Helping companies communicate with their people | Passionate about internal communication | Keynote speaker | Published author | Podcaster | IABC EMENA Region Incoming Chair
He said that he used to be a CEO and he'd be speaking about the mistakes he'd made and what he'd learned. Then, we dove into a big discussion about leadership communication and agreed to swap books the next day. Thank you Oscar Munoz for the great conversation and inspiring fire-side chat at the IABC World Conference recently in Chicago. I'm glad that ChatGPT couldn't produce many questions you couldn't answer. This is because you tackle them honestly in your book Turnaround Time, written with Brian DeSplinter. It was a pleasure to read. These are some of my learnings from the humble leader Oscar Munoz: 1. Listen to your people. Oscar did a 37 day listening tour when he stepped into the role. It helped him understand the real issues that United Airlines faced at the time. Your people are smart. They know what the problems are. 2. As a comms professional, you need to make sure your leaders comprehend what you're telling them. Speak their language. Explain what things mean, the risks, and the consequences. Oscar said they really didn't understand what was unfolding with the passenger. 3. If you're feeling unwell and need to call the ambulance. First let them know where you are and make sure they can get in. It saved his life after a post-run heart attack. I thought a lot about this on my run this morning. 4. If you've earnt the trust of your people by listening, they will rally around you in times of need. It is not only about listening. It is about appreciating their value as intelligent humans. 5. Be humble. Be human. Take ownership. Thank you Brian DeSplinter for the photos - you can see him on the left of the fab Teresa Zumwald, Oscar and I. Wishing everyone an inspiring day! 🛩 Monique

How many people should be on a communications team? To what department should it report? Should all the company communicators report to one department or be distributed across operations, reporting to various division leaders? How should the communication function be structured? If you have ever faced these questions, you'll want to tune in to the July episode of IABC's "Circle of Fellows" panel. I will moderate the panel with Diane Gayeski, Russell Grossman, Dr. (Col.) Rajeev Kumar, ABC, IABC Fellow, and Leticia Narvaez, ABC. Join me at noon ET on Thursday, July 18 and bring your questions! https://lnkd.in/dkATEkqu

I recently returned from Chicago where I attended the IABC World Conference. I enjoyed meeting communicators from across the world, while getting smarter on communications, leadership, and overall professional development. Sharing a few quotes/takeaways from the conference I continue to think about… - “Trust travels at the speed of transparency.” - Oscar Munoz, former CEO and chairman of United Airlines - “I’m not in the communications business; I’m in the courage business.” - Jason Anthoine, an internal comms expert and leader, and my first boss, as told by Katie Macaulay when recounting insights from 100 comms pioneers - “Until the lion tells the story, the hunter will always be the hero.” - Catherine Fisette during her session on cognitive biases - When discussing the science of happiness, Catherine Sanderson shared 10 strategies to improve happiness. My favorite was making a gratitude visit; the idea is to think about a person who changed your life in significant ways, write them a letter about their impact, and share the letter with them. Unfortunately, we often wait until it’s too late, Catherine remarked, to have these conversations and show this appreciation. - “What are you saying to yourself during times of stress?” - Carolon Donnally PCC,MSOD poignantly asked during her session on preventing burnout and the importance of self-compassion - The value of validation. Julian Treasure stressed this point during his keynote on listening. “I don’t agree with you, but I can see how you feel that way.” A forgotten skill in today’s world. Overall, excellent experience! Great meeting those of you I’ve recently connected with following the conference!

Have you heard of the “80/20 Rule”? 💡 It’s the idea that the small number of tasks that you accomplish (20%) lead to most of the results (80%) you desire. Maliha Aqeel, IABC international board past chair, explains the concept further in her guide, “Getting More Done With Less: Using the 80/20 Rule.” For more insights, go to: https://lnkd.in/e8hmHUMi #IABC #IABCDC | Maliha Aqeel PMP, SCMP, MC ———————— IABC DC Metro board, please repost and share with your network: Giuseppe Laviano, Denise Hobik, Eli Natinsky, Sue O'Hora, Amy Shields, and Amy Richardson

Strategic Communication Consultant, Trainer and Coach Helping Communication Professionals and Business Leaders Amplify Their Impact | Co-Founder The Alignment People and Gifted Professionals & Communicators Community
I've been back home for a week now, and despite the lingering jet lag from those 20+ hours on a plane, I’m still buzzing with excitement! Attending IABC's World Conference in Chicago was an incredible experience – and the city itself was a feast for the senses! So much to see, do, and taste. My trip to Chicago had two main purposes: presenting the findings of the joint Haiilo and Centre for Strategic Communication Excellence study on strategic internal communication and running a certification masterclass for the Global Communication Certification Council (GCCC). If you know me, you know how passionately I advocate for certification – it's invaluable for both individuals and our profession. I was also fortunate to spend quality time with my many IABC and GCCC colleagues, and our amazing CSCE partners, Mike Klein FIIC, FCSCE, SCMP and Ann-Marie Blake. It was an honour to witness my friend, Theomary Karamanis, PhD, SCMP, IABC Fellow, receive her IABC Fellow recognition. The highlight of my trip was spending time with seven of the eight wonderful individuals I had worked with over the past three months through the GCCC concierge program – a program providing tailored training, coaching and assistance with application and exam preparation. This was one of the most rewarding experiences of my entire career. These individuals embody the spirit of community, friendship, and support. They are among the loveliest people you will ever meet, and I will cherish our time together forever. Here’s to you: Allison Dietz, SCMP®, Arek Gazda, MA, SCMP®, Michael Blackburn, SCMP®, Rebecca Shaffer, SCMPⓇ, 🎯 Vicki Wolpoff, SCMP®, Mary Roberson, Amie Silverwood, SCMP® and Kari E. McLean, CMP®. Below is a photo of us and the GCCC's immediate past chair, Sharon Hunter, SCMP on Chicago’s Magnificent Mile after they treated me to a lovely dinner to thank me for working with them. In truth, I should be thanking them. Their warmth, kindness, and love made my time in Chicago unforgettable. I look forward to our next gathering in Vancouver for IABC’s 2025 World Conference! Why do I champion certification? Because it’s more than just a credential; it’s a commitment to excellence. Our profession is vital, and our work makes a significant impact every day. As communication professionals, we are the architects of connection, the builders of trust, and the champions of clarity in a world that desperately needs our skills. My late friend, Deb Ganderton, who became certified in her early 60s while serving as CEO of her organisation, summed it up perfectly: “If we don't respect our profession, why should anyone else?” Her words resonate deeply with me and underscore the importance of what we do. By becoming certified, you are making a statement about your commitment to the highest standards of strategic communication. If you're curious about certification or want to learn more, please reach out. I’d love to chat. #IABC24 #communication #certification
