The National Governors Association's Next Generation of the Healthcare Workforce Project encourages members to lean more heavily on “non-traditional” approaches (i.e., anything besides four-year college degree requirements) for training skilled workers in scores of fields: apprenticeships, community college programs, work-based learning initiatives, and the like. The coordination fostered by NGA's project is the key to initiatives like Jared Polis's Care Forward Colorado initiative, which provides free training and certification at 19 community and technical colleges for jobs like nursing assistant, emergency medical technician, pharmacy technician and medical assistant. In its first year, the program increased enrollment by 20% — training 3,000 students for healthcare jobs, with an additional 5,000 enrolled. “It’s the kind of innovation that could make the difference in whether a hospital remains open, not to mention its impact on community college enrollment,” NGA says. More details — and snippets from a live KPI dashboard from Colorado's 2yo program — in this week's newsletter: https://lnkd.in/g4GrgBa3 #healthcare #workforce #jobtraining #innovation
