The mission of the HAPS Alliance is to eliminate the digital divide and bring connectivity to more people, places and things worldwide by using high altitude platform stations (HAPS) operating 20km above Earth in the stratosphere. The Alliance brings together some of the world's most recognizable companies across telecommunications, technology, aviation and aerospace. United in the goal of promoting HAPS technology, the Alliance was founded in 2020.

HAPS Alliance member Aerostar (Aerostar International LLC) recently conducted a high altitude balloon training with the US Army as part of Valiant Shield 24 -- a multinational, biennial field training exercise focused on integrating interoperability in a multi-domain environment. SoftBank is continuing its R&D efforts to advance foundational technologies that will provide stable and high-quality communications networks that utilize HAPS. Power generation for #HAPS technologies is incredibly important. It's also incredibly complex since most HAPS flight vehicles rely on solely on solar power. Since the sun constantly changes its angle, the installation angles of the solar cells on the aircraft surface vary, and the entire HAPS performs a three-axis rotation, it's important to be able to accurately simulate power generation so it exceeds power consumption. Thankfully, SoftBank and Miyazaki Municipal University are collaborating to develop a HAPS power generation simulation model that replicates the yaw, roll, and pitch movements of HAPS aircraft and accurately predicts solar radiation using a 3D mesh that considers the scattering of sunlight and the effects of self-shadowing. This model will help advance HAPS technology to ensure energy balance during operations. Check it out 👇
