https://lnkd.in/g_JFwNab "Wild-foraged by hand" is both an ancient practice and a modern trend. Here's a great article about the extraordinary health value of foraged Wild Black Walnuts and their "very different supply chain story." Daniel Vitalis, host of The Outdoor Channel's "Wild-Fed", podcaster, and co-founder of Surthrival, unpacks the trend and its impact on public health and the environment. It's based on Surthrival's Black Walnut Protein Power, which won a NBJ NEXTY Award for Best New Planet-Forward Product last year. Explaining how foraging Black Walnuts in the wild can be done on a large scale is Jacob Basecke, Hammons EVP. We're the only major commercial supplier of Black Walnuts and have been collecting, shelling, and selling them since the late '40s. However our collaboration with Surthrival that led to its new protein powder is new--and a window to the future of these super-nutritious, highly sustainable wild tree nuts. Great read. www.black-walnuts.com

Hammons Black Walnuts was a big hit in Canada this week during the CPMA show. Held in Vancouver, the event played host to retailers across the country. According to the Canadian government, some 70% of its consumers say they look for environmentally sustainable food. So it's no wonder that hand-harvested Wild Black Walnuts were a draw. WildFed host and entrepreneur Daniel Vitalis recently picked up a Nexty Award for his Surthrival brand wild Black Walnut Protein Powder. In his own words: "From a purely nutritional perspective, wild black walnuts have a higher protein content than other commercial tree nut crops, and so our finished protein powder has—at 17 grams of protein per serving—more protein than other plant-based protein powders. That’s incredible enough, but the sourcing of this protein powder is where it truly shines. Rather than the agricultural sourcing of other plant-based proteins, using crops that originated in other parts of the world and that rely heavily on fertilizers, irrigation, and other industrial inputs, black walnuts come from wild, native, North American trees." No wonder Black Walnuts are the hot selling superfood of 2024. https://lnkd.in/gNqm7Agt

Wild Black Walnuts have a rich tradition dating back to their discovery by indigenous peoples first arriving in North America. By the 1950s, they had become a popular delicacy in the south and south central US. Betty Crocker even had a popular Black Walnut cake mix. Today Wild Black Walnuts are riding a wave of resurgence because they are a wild, uncultivated, rain watered, hand harvested, and extraordinarily healthy plant based food. If you haven’t yet tried them in your salad, cereal, cake, ice cream, or protein shake, now’s the time! #bettycrocker, #generalmills www.black-walnuts.com

Wild Black Walnuts made a huge impact at the industry’s largest food show last week. The reason—they’re right in step with what consumers want: good health, sustainability, new flavors, excitement, transparency, and strong company values. Hammons also introduced HIKE Performance Snacks to rave reviews. Featured at the booth was Daniel Vitalis (right) of Surthrival and a star on the Outdoor Channel.
