Public Agency Project Spotlight- USPS Network Distribution Center Compressed Air Plant Upgrades The USPS Network Distribution Center in Springfield, MA processes over 250,000 packages daily for travel throughout New England and parts of New York State. Its campus utilizes two air compressor plants, with each plant featuring two 125-horsepower, air-cooled air compressors and two dryers. A usage demand analysis conducted by USPS determined that only two of the four compressors were sufficient to manage the facility. USPS decommissioned one plant and selected H2M to design a replacement for the other. They requested that each plant be interconnected and powered by two separate power stations to minimize the loss of plant operations if a power station shuts down. Project Spotlight-United States Postal Service (USPS) Network Distribution Center Compressed Air Plant Upgrades H2M’s designs for the new plant included two brand-new 125-horsepower air compressors, air dryers, a receiver tank, an oil-water separator, piping, motorized dampers, and exhaust fans. The team also replaced the facility’s existing motorized dampers to improve overall air quality, as well as circuit breakers to ensure safety with the electrical systems. H2M also provided construction administration services, including attendance at on-site meetings, scheduling of contractors, review of payment requisitions, and oversight of equipment installation. The combined efforts of H2M’s MEP and Construction Services teams have improved the Distribution Center’s operational and energy efficiency, allowing the USPS to continue to provide courier services to the American public while saving money and the environment.

  • This week for National Make a Difference to Children Month, Studio Director Kevin Medler, RA, NYSCEO, NCIDQ is thinking about the Bronx Community College pool renovations and the importance of keeping facilities up to date and operating properly. High-traffic amenity spaces such as aquatic centers are susceptible to quicker deterioration due to their frequent use and the maintenance chemicals that can be corrosive to materials and equipment. The Bronx Community College’s Natatorium needed renovations and upgrades, including the replacement of the filtration system to maintain healthy air and water quality and new code- and ADA-compliant bathrooms, changing rooms, and accessible routes to the pool. “It is always important to assess the existing conditions of facilities in order to maintain proper operations and the safety of the public,” Medler explained. “As a parent and community member whose children actively use public amenities, I find it rewarding to be able to make a positive impact on the spaces used by the community.”

  • This week in National Make a Difference to Children Month, we are spotlighting Studio Director Jason Smith, RA, LEED AP BD+C, CSI, CDT and the Malverne Union Free School District’s High School’s Performing Arts Center. Despite their award-winning band, the Malverne High School did not have its own auditorium. Students had to use the middle school’s facilities across the street. H2M architects + engineers designed a 29,273-square-foot addition comprising a 300-seat auditorium, large chorus room with smaller practice rooms, large band room surrounded by smaller private instruction rooms, dark room for black-and-white film, art room, and a music theory and piano lab. Mr. Smith is an alum of the Malverne School District. He graduated from the high school when most events were held in the gym, which is not well-suited for the performing arts. He remembers the high school as cramped before the addition improved indoor circulation and flow. “The arts are a component of overall learning and becoming well-rounded,” Smith explained. “Certain students excel scholastically but others excel in the arts. You shouldn’t be hindered in achieving excellence just because the school doesn’t have the space.”
