Last week, Associate Director and UAS operations lead Davis Ladd, along with Ecology Intern Drake Austro-Stasyshyn, took to the skies over one of our large-scale restoration sites in Imperial County, CA to monitor restoration progress and capture source imagery to develop orthomosaics of multiple sites targeted for future restoration and development. Utilizing drone technology, especially at project sites spanning vast areas with dense vegetation, enhances project efficiency and gives us a comprehensive perspective of site current conditions and restoration efforts. We also love providing hands-on experience to our interns and allowing them to engage in impactful work! Interested in learning more about our drone services? Whether you're a field ecologist, an avid hiker, or simply live near natural spaces, encountering a snake 🐍 (and giving them some slithery space) is more a matter of "when" than "if". For ecologist and snake enthusiast Brittany Dell, snake encounters are a treasured moment, especially if they are venomous! In celebration of World Snake Day, Brittany shares her experience with venomous snakes from rescue operations in Indonesia to her recent venomous snake training with Save The Snakes in our latest blog! The Klamath River, stretching over 250 miles through Oregon and Northern California, is undergoing a historic transformation. The Klamath Dam Removal Project, the largest of its kind, aims to restore the river’s ecosystem by dismantling four hydroelectric dams. This ambitious initiative promises to revive fish populations and heal the river’s ecosystem, crucial for wildlife and indigenous communities. While Great Ecology has not been a part of this project, we have conducted a Cost-Benefit Analysis (CBA) to assess potential ecological and economic improvements resulting from removing three dams in the northeastern United States. In addition, Great Ecology has been part of historic river revegetation efforts as part of the Emergency Watershed Protection Project, in Colorado. If you’re in the position to sign off on dam removal or riparian revegetation efforts, like those occurring along the Klamath, Great Ecology can help. Interested in reading more about this groundbreaking project and our work on similar projects? As ecologists, helping to preserve habitats and species is an important part of what we do and volunteer work is one of the many ways we dedicate ourselves to improving the world around us! And who doesn't like getting up close and personal with some horseshoe crabs? 🐴🦀 In celebration of International Horseshoe Crab Day, we'd like to shout out coastal ecologists, Jessica Druze, WPIT and Ryan Morrison, and landscape architect Kathleen Haas PLA, ASLA, for their recent volunteer work tagging and photographing horseshoe crabs in Neptune, New Jersey as part of a monitoring effort with the American Littoral Society. We love to see our team giving back to the community and dedicating their time to protecting important creatures like these! 💡 Creature Fact: Horseshoe crabs are not crustaceans but actually chelicerates, closely related to arachnids such as spiders and scorpions! #horseshoecrab #conservation #speciesconservation #coastalconservation #volunteerwork #employeeappreciation #ecology #environmentalconsulting #marinebiology #environmentaljobs
