We apply the science of ecology to restore ecosystems, conserve habitat, and regenerate natural systems.
About us
Mission: Restore The Earth And Inspire Ecological Stewardship. Our practice can best be defined as a blend of sound science, place-based design and ecological democracy. It is rooted in deep ecology with an underpinning that all species have equal rights, and that we have an ethical obligation to ensure that our actions do not interfere with their evolutionary potential. It is ingrained with the intent to design with ‘place’ and all of its complexity, diversity and life. And it is infused with a sense of compassion, fairness and equity for all peoples and their communities. Science forms the core of our practice. Science that is as informed by rigorous field investigations and meticulous research as it is from knowing the land and learning its stories. While the science provides us with the facts, stories provide the context to help us see things from a whole-systems perspective. Patterns, connections and relationships continually reveal themselves through stories, providing a rich tapestry of life that forms the basis of our design ethos.

Today I had the opportunity to visit a project that was built eight years ago and really underscores the need for a maintenance program for sites. UNC - Chapel Hill has done a great job maintaining the landscaping and overall quality of this site. This quad used to be a mown lawn in front of a residence hall- now it not only treats Stormwater and daylighted a piped stream, it has created tons of habitat for flora and fauna. Plus a great place for students to take a break from the rigors of campus life. - Battle Grove RSC. Built in 2014 at UNC - Chapel Hill. Discover how to ace International Living Future Institute's Living Building Challenge in the latest issue of Architectural Products, where Miller Hull Principal Margaret Sprug, AIA, and Associate Chris Hellstern, AIA, LFA, LEED AP, CDT, share challenges, lessons learned, and LBC-certified inspiration with the Kendeda Building for Innovative Sustainable Design. “While it’s not to say regenerative buildings aren’t beautiful, the aesthetics are a result of following natural principles. ‘Like a flower, each component of a building has to serve a purpose that contributes to an ecosystem that is in balance,’ explains Sprug. She urged designers whose architectural education may have encouraged bold forms and iconic style to approach living buildings without a lot of ego. ‘Our frame of mind has to be very humble when we come into a project. We can’t have a lot of hubris about how awesome this thing is going to look because we wanted to have a big architectural statement,’ she explains. The priority must remain on striking a balance between the building and the natural processes it’s part of. ‘That’s a very different way of thinking about a project and moving it forward,’ she adds.” Thank you, Jana Madsen and Architectural Products for the feature!
