The ship’s bell from the USS Jacob Jones was recovered in partnership with Naval History and Heritage Command, SALMO Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S) and Gray & Pape, Inc. earlier this year, our Conservator Thomas W. has been stabilising it, ensuring it remains safe from further corrosion before undergoing a full conservation process. During a recent ceremony at Lancaster House in London, the bell was handed over to the U.S Navy, and is now in the care of the Naval History and Heritage Command conservation team for further assessment, treatment, and preparation for future exhibiting at the new National Museum of the U.S. Navy to honour the lost service people of the USS Jacob Jones Here you can see the bell in a stabilised condition at the Wessex Archaeology conservation labs, before it was safely packaged and prepared for its journey back to the US.
