  • We are excited to welcome Zach McKeeby to NSA! Zach is joining NSA after completing his PhD in anthropological archaeology at the University of Virginia. His areas of expertise include the anthropology of craft production, frontier interactions, and household approaches to the archaeology of daily life, and he specializes in spatial and archaeometric approaches to the archaeological record including near-surface geophysics, GIS, archaeometallurgy, and X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy. Zach’s thesis and recent published work studied the evolution of iron production in Zambia as a socio-technical institution, and contextualized changes in the ways communities engaged with regional political changes and global networks in southern Africa. Zach’s graduate degree built upon, and ran parallel to, over a decade of experience in public archaeology, collaborative citizen-science and community-based archaeological research and he has worked to center community-engaged and public-facing methodologies in New York and Virginia. Since 2013 he has directed research programs partnering with local municipalities, NY-based non-profits, descendant communities and Tribal leaders to develop and conduct Phase I-II investigations as community-based youth archaeological field schools. Having been initially trained in archaeology within a participatory and community-engaged approach to archaeology, he is particularly excited by the way New South Associates foregrounds and integrates public-facing, community-engaged methodologies with ethical scholarly rigor at the heart of their Section 106 work. Zach will be based out of NSA’s Fairfax, Virginia office.
