Upcoming Webinar │ It Takes a Village: How Dementia Villages are Transforming Care for People Living with Memory Loss │We’re teaming up with Bader Philanthropies, Inc. on Thursday, 5/30 at 11 am ET for a conversation on the groundbreaking model of dementia care in the Netherlands and the feasibility and benefits of establishing similar models in the U.S. Dementia Villages, pioneered by Hogeweyk in the Netherlands, provides a holistic and supportive environment tailored specifically for individuals living with dementia. These assisted living “cities within a city” are a radical alternative to traditional memory care units within long-term care facilities. We’ll explore the key principles and design elements of the Hogeweyk approach. Partners working to develop Livasu Village in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, will also share their experience shifting how people with dementia live within their community. REGISTER: https://bit.ly/4dvHtWf

Ugly surprise of the day: you are never too old to struggle with student debt. About 3.5 million people age 60+ hold more than $125 billion in student loans, collectively, putting them at risk of aging into poverty and even compromising adequate Social Security benefits. Thanks to RRF Foundation for Aging for their leadership on this policy problem and highlighting an important opportunity to share comments with the Department of Education on new draft rules to address it. The RRF brief (available at https://bit.ly/3ysNXVH) is a great resource for facts and figures to help you raise your own voice for this much-needed fix. Comment by Friday 5.17! at https://lnkd.in/g-f8ud3C
DEADLINE APPROACHING THIS WEEK! The U.S. Department of Education has proposed new rules on student loan debt relief that could substantially benefit older borrowers. We especially applaud the proposed cancelation of remaining balances on very old loans that could provide relief to at least 2.3 million older adults struggling with unaffordable student loan debt. We also favor proposed protections for older adults who cannot afford their student loan payments, end up in default, and risk a portion of their Social Security benefits seized by the government. This pushes their benefit below the poverty line in most cases. See the announcement of proposed rules here: https://lnkd.in/gD_rVApA The Department is accepting comments through May 17 at https://lnkd.in/g-f8ud3C. If you support relieving the burden of unaffordable student loans on older adults, please consider submitting comments by May 17th. Here is the link to RRF’s comments. https://lnkd.in/eHXvYEzx Feel free to use portions of our comment or create your own and submit. Thank you.

The #OlderAmericansAct is turning 60! Instead of just reauthorizing it, what if we modernize it, to meet the needs of older Americans today? That's the challenge from our CEO Lindsay Goldman and Grantmakers In Health CEO Cara James, writing in The Well NYC (read it at bit.ly/44JhHdd) We can't miss this chance. Nearly 70% of older adults will need long-term care services, yet few can afford them, according to the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation. We’re asking Congress to increase authorization levels for the OAA; incentivize public-private partnerships; strengthen programs for caregivers (both paid and unpaid); address the needs of older Americans in rural communities; and pass the Addressing Social Isolation and Loneliness in Older Adults (SILO) Act and the Strategic Plan on Aging Act, which would provide grants for Multi Sector Plans for Aging. It's a big birthday for the OAA – help us make it count! Learn more at https://lnkd.in/gHXPMVj4.
