Mark Szewcow, P.E., works as our head Engineer and Project Manager for Traffic Engineering. Mark has worked with Gibson-Thomas since 2018. “I was first exposed to Traffic Engineering back at my time at the University of Pittsburgh. At the time, I didn’t know that Traffic Engineers existed. I thought it was so interesting that people thought about things such as traffic signal timings, pavement marking plans, and maintenance and protection of traffic plans. I had a great traffic engineering professor, so I was hooked.” Mark notes that his professor at Pitt inspired him to pursue his career when he showed him how important traffic engineering is to society. His favorite projects recently are Active Transportation Plans. “I have really enjoyed working with my team on these types of projects. You really get to know the municipalities and what they envision the future of their community will look like. It’s exciting to see people getting behind change in their towns.” Mark’s favorite hobbies outside of work consist of watching or playing sports, going to concerts, and listening to his old albums. Mark enjoys a lot of things about Gibson-Thomas, but the number one thing he enjoys is the people he works with. “Everyone is always willing to help you and are committed to have a successful project.” Learn more about Mark’s Transportation and Traffic work here: https://lnkd.in/e_dtjBHQ #GTEemployeespotlight #trafficengineers #careersinengineering

The Shinsky Bridge, located in Unity Township, was designed by Gibson-Thomas. This project aimed to replace this existing single-span rolled steel multi-beam bridge with a single-span prestressed concrete box beam bridge supported by integral abutments. The replacement of this bridge was critical to address public safety concerns, as the previous state of the structure did not allow for certain emergency vehicles to cross. Check out the before and after photos below! #civilengineering #unitytownship #westmorelandcountypa

PROJECT UPDATE 💥 Yesterday, our SR 0772-034 project hit Stage 3 of its construction phases. This project is the replacement of an existing 2-span steel girder bridge with a single span prestressed concrete spread box beam bridge for PennDOT District 8-0 in Lancaster County, PA. The bridge is being replaced using multiple stages of construction in order to maintain a single lane of traffic at all times. Sidewalks are being added to both shoulders of the bridge to provide pedestrian access to two local parks located at the east approach of the bridge. J.D. Eckman, Inc. is the Department’s Contractor for this project. #transportation #construction

Gibson-Thomas, in conjunction with PennDOT Districts 11-0 and 12-0, has recently energized three new traffic signals. The signals are located at East 10th Avenue and Corbet Street (Tarentum Borough), Pittsburgh Street and North/South Highland Avenue (Cheswick Borough) and Main Street and Third Street (Irwin Borough). The new designs include radar vehicle detection, pedestrian push buttons and countdown signal heads, ADA curb ramps, emergency vehicle detection, battery back-ups and accessible pedestrian signals. The new traffic signals are a huge upgrade for mobility and safety at the intersections. The traffic signals located in Tarentum and Irwin Boroughs were funded by PennDOT Automated Red-Light Enforcement (ARLE) Grants, which Gibson-Thomas assisted in obtaining. #ARLE #trafficsignal #PennDOT

Earlier this spring, Gibson-Thomas’ Nicholas Puzak was invited to speak to the 1st graders at Blairsville Elementary School. Nick is a Blairsville High School graduate and was asked to come in by former classmate Mrs. Underwood. The crowd was a little different – and quite a bit younger – than the high schoolers that Nick usually speaks to. However, the kids had a ton of great questions and were very interested in some of the projects that Nick has worked on in the Blairsville area. Hopefully the group will generate a few engineering graduates when they finish college in 2039! #communityservice #blairsvilleschooldistrict #civilengineers
