We applaud this action from the Hennepin County Attorney's office to decriminalize pregnancy. “Punitive measures and coercion only serve to strip pregnant people of their bodily autonomy, jeopardize pregnancy outcomes, and make families less safe," says Jess Braverman, Gender Justice legal director. "The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office is taking a positive step towards decriminalizing pregnancy and dismantling the health care to prison pipeline.”

Sharing this update with our community from our partners at Family Tree Clinic about our fellow partner, Rainbow Health. We, too, are deeply saddened to learn of this loss of a critical resource — our hearts go out to the staff and clients of Rainbow Health. Rainbow Health Legal Services Coordinator Ash Tifa was featured on a recent episode of The Gender Justice Brief podcast about the right to gender-affirming care in Minnesota, and discussed the free monthly Name Change Clinic she co-facilitates with Family Tree Clinic. Despite the uncertainties surrounding Rainbow Health, that workshop will go on this evening as planned — many thanks to both Ash and to Phil Duran, Rainbow Health's Director of Advocacy and Community Engagement, for their commitment and dedication to the community's needs. (More information about the Name Change and Gender Marker Clinic at 4:30 pm today at Family Tree Clinic, 1919 Nicollet Ave, Minneapolis: https://lnkd.in/gUb2-NtM)
We are deeply saddened to hear of Rainbow Health's sudden dissolution yesterday. Rainbow Health provided such important services for our communities, and we extend our deepest gratitude to their dedicated staff during this difficult time. Family Tree Clinic is committed to working in collaboration with our partners to ensure continuity of care for our LGBTQ communities. Please know the Name Change and Gender Marker Clinic organized by Rainbow Health will still be happening at Family Tree Clinic today as originally planned, thanks to the incredible dedication of Ash Tifa and Phil Duran. In keeping with our values of collaboration, transparency, and being responsive to our communities, we will share any updates and resources as they become available. For now, we are asking for your continued and deepened support of our local LGBTQ organizations, the incredible staff and clients of Rainbow Health, and of each other. The strongest safety nets are woven out of community ties.

The latest Supreme Court rulings are already being weaponized against gender identity. Abortion, birth control, and pregnant workers' rights are next — no matter who wins the presidential election this fall. Recommended reading by journalist Nina Martin in Mother Jones.

"The Minnesota Supreme Court’s decision to hear this case is a promising step toward justice for JayCee Cooper and all transgender athletes," says Gender Justice legal director Jess Braverman about our landmark case with sweeping implications.

We're back from our summer break with big news! In a case that could set a precedent for the rights of transgender athletes to compete, the Minnesota Supreme Court announced it will hear Cooper v. USA Powerlifting. We have been fighting for JayCee Cooper since she first took on the organization after it denied her the right to compete, and now she's headed to the highest court in Minnesota. We're so proud to represent her.

"We still enjoy the right to make our own reproductive decisions in Minnesota, at least for now," says Mitchell Hamline School of Law professor Laura Hermer. "But our rights will not be secure without the passage of something like the Equal Rights Amendment, which once again failed in the last legislative session."

NEW PODCAST EPISODE JUST DROPPED! "To ensure appropriate medical care, Idaho’s largest provider of emergency services had to airlift pregnant women out of the state roughly every other week, compared to once in all of the prior year." — Justice Elena Kagan. None of that would have been necessary had the Supreme Court permitted the lower court's injunction on Idaho's ban to go forward, which is the action that comes out of yesterday's decision (while the Court cynically delays until another election takes place.) On the podcast, Jess Braverman and Erin Maye Quade analyze yesterday's long-awaited ruling in the U.S. Supreme Court's second major abortion case since the fall of Roe. Stay informed and treat yourself to lively conversation while you're at it: listen and subscribe to The Gender Justice Brief, our award-winning podcast!
