Thomas DeGonia, Bar Counsel for the Attorney Grievance Commission for Maryland, joined Gallagher yesterday to share about his office's role in maintaining the integrity of the legal profession and protecting the public. “We are truly a fiduciary,” he explained, noting that there are 43,000 licensed attorneys in Maryland and that about 1,600 complaints were made in 2023 from a variety of sources. “Our office reviews each and every one. The goal is not to be unnecessarily aggressive but to have as many good practitioners as possible.” We appreciate Mr. DeGonia taking the time to speak to our firm about Bar Counsel’s role in supporting the public and the profession by enforcing the Maryland Attorneys’ Rules of Professional Conduct.

It's not all work and no play for our summer associates. Captain Andy of Schooner Woodwind delivered what he described as a "spicy" sailboat ride for Gallagher attorneys and our associates on a beautiful day in Annapolis this past week. They have also participated in trivia with Stephen Walsh of Walsh Trivia, watched an Orioles game, and, coming up next, will enjoy an interactive cooking class at Schola.

Volunteering and giving back to the community are important at Gallagher, and our employees currently volunteer with 75 different organizations. Jean Sommers, who has worked in Gallagher’s reception and purchasing department for decades, has a huge heart and is a longtime volunteer with Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter (BARCS). You may have read in last month’s news about 83 dogs and one cat that were seized from a Northwest Baltimore home. We are happy to report that one of those dogs has gone from being a foster to a permanent member of Jean’s household. We wish Jean and her new companion, Niles, a very happy life together!

Thank you to Max Beatty of Beatty Development Group and Gallagher attorneys Mark Keener, Adam Block, and Celine Esmeir for arranging a tour of the ongoing construction projects in Harbor Point for our summer associates. Gallagher attorneys have worked on the development, construction, financing, and leasing of Harbor Point for more than 20 years. After the tour, the group had lunch at Attman's Delicatessen, a New York-style Jewish deli, which opened in early 2024 at Harbor Point. Our attorneys Kyle Virtue and Adam Block negotiated the Attman’s lease on behalf of the landlord. Gallagher handles all of the retail and office leasing at Harbor Point.

Greenery, fresh air, volunteering – what’s not to love? This month a group of Gallagher attorneys and their families and friends, as well as our summer associate Rebecca Hill, teamed up with Baltimore Green Space for some community service sprucing up the Govans Urban Forest on York Road in Baltimore. We’re happy to report that no bee stings were endured in this clean-up organized by our Pro Bono and Community Service Committee. #CommunityService #GiveBack #LegalIndustry

Gallagher is proud to receive this year’s Voice of Justice Award from the University of Baltimore School of Law’s Fannie Angelos Program for Excellence. This award is presented annually to organizations which “give generously of their time and resources to support Fannie Angelos Program participants as well as the ultimate aim to remove barriers to the legal profession for individuals underrepresented in the field.” Gallagher is honored to work with the Fannie Angelos Program leadership team (F. Michael Higginbotham, J.D., LL.M., Michael Meyerson, and Patrice Wedderburn), and we have enjoyed meeting and supporting the students who participate.
