Harnessing forest fungal networks to address the biodiversity and climate crises.
About us
At Funga, we use the forest fungal microbiome to improve forestry outcomes and address the climate crisis while enhancing beneficial microbial biodiversity. We combine modern DNA sequencing and machine learning technology with breakthrough research on the forest microbiome to put the right native, biodiverse communities of mycorrhizal fungi in the right place. This leads to more quality wood created more quickly, more carbon sequestered, and more resilient forest ecologies.

Lately, I have seen an influx of negative coverage when it comes to solutions being presented to address the climate and biodiversity crises. While we should strive for scientific rigor in all of these pursuits, we don't want to dismantle all confidence in these new ideas in the name of caution. I hope to see, and to participate in building, a ethos in climate action that can embrace iteration and improvement, that can use criticism to better identify and build up promising innovations (and still weed out bad actions when necessary) instead of disavowing approaches that by nature are an experimental process. Since it's a Friday, I don't want to end this post on a down note, so I want to provide some perspective from my life where I work to take action at personal, local and global level. Everyone can make a difference, it just requires action and adaptation over time! - Personal - Converting turf grass to native wildflowers every spring (See picture - it's lovely, helps pollinators, no mowing) - Local - Working to make my woods healthier over time by improving forest conditions including structure and regeneration (see the large trees and new forest growing in the canopy gap) - Global - Working to scale Funga biotechnology that restores the forest soil microbiome creating positive climate, biodiversity and livelihood outcomes. (J. Anthony Seliskar is standing next to a Funga inoculated seedling to his right and control seedling to his left) We're faced with a novel problem that requires novel solutions, and we need all hands on deck....onwards!!!

PRT/IFCO is thrilled to announce our exciting new partnership with Funga , a startup dedicated to restoring forest soil biodiversity! Funga uses the forest fungal microbiome to improve forestry outcomes, microbial biodiversity, and increase carbon sequestration. PRT/IFCO is joining forces with Funga to provide the crucial nursery infrastructure and seedling expertise needed to expand their operations and scale their efforts in the South East. Through innovative financing opportunities from the voluntary carbon market, this partnership is unlocking additional value for forest landowners. From soil microbiome restoration to increased yield and carbon market engagement, we're empowering landowners with new avenues for revenue generation and sustainable land management. We are thrilled to announce that Funga is partnering with PRT-IFCO, North America’s largest forest seedling provider, to scale up our work of restoring forest soil biodiversity—one seedling at a time. Looking ahead, PRT-IFCO will serve as Funga’s tree nursery partner, and Funga will be PRT-IFCO’s fungal inoculation provider. This is a transformative milestone for regenerative forestry, unlocking new value for landowners and new life for the landscapes they manage. Nature-based carbon credits are a powerful tool for the world to achieve net-zero emissions. But time is of the essence. American Forest Foundation, Conservation International, Environmental Defense Fund, Fauna & Flora, The Nature Conservancy, and Wildlife Conservation Society are joining forces to call on Science Based Targets initiative to allow use of carbon credits for Scope 3 emissions with 5 key guardrails. Our letter stresses how, with proper science and evidence-based guardrails, carbon credits will speed, not hinder, climate progress at a global scale. Download our letter here:
