The grant will allow us to guide students in navigating academic rigor, complex social pressures (including social media), and increased mental health challenges. Thanks to our 2-year Aim High funding, FYI's middle schoolers will get to 9th grade on time & ready to thrive. #AfterschoolWorks New York Life Insurance Company

So much appreciation to our Valley Bank volunteer squad! Our 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders had so much fun playing the money game -- you made learning about earning, saving, and spending so much fun - thank you!
Valley's interns across our footprint have truly embodied the spirit of service and community this summer alongside our managers and mentors. We're proud to see our interns dedicate their time and energy to making a positive impact. Their efforts have touched lives and made a difference in our communities. At Valley, our interns have access to professional development AND they're out there in the community, showing up as Community Leaders. Congratulations, Janelle and Fola! It was a true pleasure getting to know you and Peter through the Place FORWARD project. We also look forward to continuing - and expanding - our relationship with Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health!
Last week, I had the pleasure of presenting my project as a FORWARD Fellow at the 2nd Annual Health Equity Showcase hosted by the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health. This project, PLACE Forward, was done in collaboration with my co-fellow Fola Wilson and preceptors peter lewis and Roxanne Russell of the Digital Learning Studio. We created short documentary films celebrating the public health champions of Washington Heights, organizations and projects that address community needs and promote health equity. 🔗 Watch a trailer of our short films: https://lnkd.in/gTWms8QU My utmost gratitude to the community leaders who openly and wholeheartedly welcomed and shared their valuable insights with us: from Hike the Heights—Ysabel Abreu, Coach Dave Crenshaw, Dr. Robert Fullilove, Audrey Jenkins, MPH, and Tatiana Mahoney; from The Armory Foundation—Alberto Aquino, Rita Finkel, Clayton Harding, Zakia Haywood, and Bassett Thompson; from Fresh Youth Initiatives, Inc.—Maria Herrera, Susan Natacha Gonzalez, MA, ATR, MS Ed, and Beatriz Oliva, LMHC, PhD-Candidate, and from the Clementine Collective—Heather Butts and Colette Kirkpatrick. These short features are just the first step, and I can’t wait to see how these partnerships between Mailman and the community are sustained. This has been one of the highlights of my graduate education, and I encourage current and incoming students to be a part of this enriching opportunity! 🔗 Learn more about the FORWARD fellowship: https://lnkd.in/g2kmUJ_i

We cannot stress enough how real this is -- Young people's social-emotional skills continue to lag and are seriously exacerbated by negative effects of social media! FYI is investing heavily in staff training to bolster our kids' SEL skills to combat this. "New York City schools are grappling with a spike in discipline problems among children, evidence that the disruptions caused by the coronavirus pandemic are having lingering effects, educators and experts say." https://lnkd.in/eQhGHqCU

"New national research released this week underscored the long-term impact of the pandemic and remote learning: U.S. students have made up just a third of their pandemic losses in math, and inequality has widened, with students in poor communities at a greater disadvantage than they were five years ago." https://lnkd.in/dX-4sJt4

"If you [girls younger than 20] spend more than 3 1/2 hours on social media daily, you are twice as liable to suffer from depression and anxiety.” Thank you to Univision's Mariela Salgado for giving voice to our Girls Group participants at Gregorio Luperon HS, underscoring the adverse psychological effects of social media on youth. We are proud of them for sharing their experiences and thoughts. (note: the story is in Spanish) https://lnkd.in/ez6rJRAk

Our year-round youth programs are free of charge to 1,300 kids each year. Hard-working parents/caregivers rely on FYI's bilingual-bicultural staff to provide academic, Social-Emotional Learning (SEL), mental health and wellness, creative arts, and sports/movement programs to help their children thrive and be successful in their future careers. We don't usually use LinkedIn to make appeals but giving and philanthropy are so important in the workplace, so here we are! Consider becoming an FYI Sustainer with a monthly gift of as little as $20 - it WILL make a difference to a child! https://lnkd.in/gQRfpgvX
