Philanthropic Advisor | Helping individuals, families, and organizations effect meaningful change through focused, strategic philanthropy.

I spent last week in Iowa City at the Iowa Summer Writing Festival, a program of the University of Iowa. It was SO good to be back among the fine ISWF staff and faculty and all those writers. And after six years away, I was reminded by every plaque along the Literary Walk, the new building for the Creative Nonfiction Writing Program, the Dey House (home of the iconic Iowa Writers' Workshop), and the daily author readings at Prairie Lights Bookstore (where I spent many $$$), what a unique place this Iowa City is. Thanks for welcoming all of us aspiring writers every summer.

I'm pleased to have a second guest article in Neighbors of Southwest Champaign, a monthly print publication of Best Version Media. Thank you, Steve Miller and Ekta Garg for inviting me to share thoughts about how our neighbors can involve their children in philanthropic endeavors and how they can be confident that their charitable gifts are making a difference.

Is feeding the hungry one of your philanthropic passions? What about environmental sustainability? Let's take a moment to recognize the role that our farmers play to move the needle on both! https://lnkd.in/g7siv57r

Did you know it's National Ag Day? Let's celebrate what farmers across the United States make possible for all of us, especially those who are investing in sustainable solutions to feed a growing population on a warming planet. #sustainability #farming #food

  • This is a fantastic resource for students struggling to fund their continued education. Kudos to Busey for this contribution to the communities in their markets.

Philanthropic Advisor | Helping individuals, families, and organizations effect meaningful change through focused, strategic philanthropy.

Practical Tip No. 5 for Year-End Giving: Always, always, always consult with your professional tax advisor if you are considering a larger gift than usual, or a gift made in a new way for you. Your circumstances may influence the wisdom of these choices. While you give to make a difference, being informed about the financial implications for you and your family helps you make the best decisions overall. Let’s recap my Year-End Giving Tips. ➤ Tip No. 1: Pay attention to the calendar and know for whom it must be December 31. ➤ Tip No. 2: Consider giving appreciated assets, rather than cash. ➤ Tip No. 3: If you are 70 ½ or older, consider a Qualified Charitable Distribution from your IRA. ➤ Tip No. 4: Consider, or re-consider, your charitable choices. ➤ Tip No. 5: Always consult with your professional tax advisor if you are considering a larger gift than usual, or a gift made in a new way for you.   Be sure to visit foxphilanthropic.com for more information. May 2024 and every year to follow bring good health and happiness, and may you and yours experience the joy of making a difference through philanthropy.  #yearendgiving #newyear #charity

  • Tip No. 4!

Practical Tip No. 4 for Year-End Giving: Consider, or Re-consider, Your Charitable Choices Don’t get me wrong; I’m not suggesting your choices have been bad ones. But if you always give to the same organizations year after year, it may be time to step back and consider what you want to accomplish with your philanthropic investments. Might it be time to support different or additional organizations to make the change you’d like to see in the world? ➤ A simple Internet search can help identify organizations doing work in areas that matter most to you. ➤ You can research individual charities on their websites and through sites such as Charity Navigator, GuideStar, and GiveWell. ➤ Don’t hesitate to speak with staff and board members at local organizations to learn more about what they do and the impact they have in your community. ➤ A qualified philanthropic advisor can assist, too. DM me if you’d like to learn more about that – no obligation or fee.   Read my recent blog post at foxphilanthropic.com for more information, and stay tuned for my final year-end tip tomorrow! And of course, always consult with our own professional tax advisor regarding the deductibility or other tax benefits of any charitable contribution. #yearend #charitablegiving #choicesmatter

Practical Tip No. 3 for Year-End Giving: Consider a Qualified Charitable Distribution From Your IRA (if you’re at least 70 ½!) ➤ If the distribution is made directly from your IRA account to a qualified charity, those dollars are not taxable as income to you. ➤Qualified Charitable Distributions count toward your required minimum distribution, resulting in reduced taxable income to you if you don’t need those funds for your own support. ➤ There are limits, like you can only make a total of $100,000 in QCDs per year, and some charities – such as private foundations and donor advised funds – don’t qualify. ➤ You can even contribute funds from your IRA for a life-income gift, like a charitable gift annuity.   Read my recent blog post at foxphilanthropic.com for more information, and stay tuned for another tip tomorrow and Friday! And of course, always consult with your own professional tax advisor regarding the deductibility or other tax benefits of any charitable contribution. #charitablegiving #yearendgiving #ira
