The FoodMinds team is brimming with evidence-based inspiration after another great year at the @AmericanSocietyforNutrition's #Nutrition2024! Here are some of the top thoughts we're taking away: 🙌 Healthy equity is non-negotiable. The urgent need to solve for issues of access, affordability and inclusiveness was evident across nutrition science topics. 🎯 Tools for precision nutrition are taking shape. Advancements AI-based algorithms, next-gen wearable tech and omics research hold exciting promise for this rapidly accelerating field. 🎨 Multi-disciplinary research teams are a must. Nutrition does not start and stop with a bite of food, and as nutrition research inputs and outcomes of interest grow more and more complex, it's essential to collaborate with experts in agriculture, technology and engineering, psychosocial dynamics and beyond. 🤝Industry plays an important role across the nutrition research life cycle. From academic-industry partnerships to evidence-based food and beverage innovation, systemic nutrition solutions take a village. 💬 Nutrition science is complex - science communication is, too. Consumers have competing needs, imperfect ways of assessing information and short attention spans. Nutrition science translation and promotion is only effective when it's strategically tailored to speak to this quintessentially human audience. What were your big takeaways??

ICYMI the 2024 IFIC Food & Health Survey was published yesterday! We look forward to this report each year and can’t wait to dive in. A few findings that caught our attention: 📈 The 2024 survey sample size has nearly tripled compared to previous years. 🥦 76% of Americans have seen MyPlate, an increase of over 10% since 2023. 💪 High protein and mindful eating continue to reign as the most common eating patterns, with high protein growing in popularity. 71% of Americans are actively trying to consume more protein, up from 59% in 2022. 💊 Overall, Americans perceive anti-obesity medications (e.g., GLP-1s) as effective but are less confident in their safety. 👅 Taste, price, healthfulness and convenience continue to be the top food and beverage purchase drivers – in that order – since the beginning of the survey; however, the order of importance shifts based on income bracket.  🛒 While most consider whether a food is processed before purchasing, only 1/3 are familiar with the term “ultraprocessed.” ☺️ 76% of Americans believe their food and beverage choices impact their mental and emotional well-being. Conversely, 65% believe their well-being impacts their food and beverage choices. 🙌 Trust in healthcare professionals generally (73%) and registered dietitians specifically (72%) about what to eat has increased since 2022. 🦠Gut health has gained significant attention in the health and wellness sector. In fact, over 80% of consumers in the US, UK, and China now recognize the importance of gut health, according to McKinsey’s recent Future of Wellness Research survey results.  This growing awareness stems from the understanding that gut health impacts not only digestion but also immunity, brain function, and overall well-being. In the annual "What's Trending in Nutrition" survey by Today's Dietitian and Pollock Communications, which included 564 Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs), 60.4% predicted that gut health products will significantly influence food and beverage purchases in 2024. Emerging trends include more gut-friendly beverages, fermented foods, advancements in microbiome testing, digestive enzyme supplements, and “post-biotics” – the beneficial byproducts produced when prebiotics and probiotics are metabolized in the gut. Keep an eye out for the upcoming International Food Information Council (IFIC) survey later this June, which may shed light on these evolving trends.  Register for IFIC’s survey findings summary via the link below. 📊 And if you can’t make it, we’ve got you covered! Stay tuned for key survey takeaways following the release of the report later this month. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gry2nVBB #dietarypatterns #foodchoices #nutrition

✅ The Dietary Advisory Committee (DGAC) concluded its fifth public meeting yesterday, delivering a full day of updates and results. Here’s what you need to know! 🍟 New scientific work around ultra-processed food (UPF) was presented, with the Committee finding limited evidence suggesting a relationship between UPF and risk of overweight/obesity. 📝 The Committee found strong evidence on the association between specific dietary patterns and the risk cardiovascular disease, which holds true for diverse racial and ethnic groups.   📉 The data analysis team highlighted that Americans still do not adhere to the Dietary Guidelines recommendations and that the prevalence of nutrition-related chronic diseases remains notably high. 🌱 Projects related to alcoholic beverages and sustainability are progressing, with results expected in late 2024/early 2025. Want to dive deeper into the DGAC process and its implications? Connect with us: http://bit.ly/3S5H7vs #DietaryGuidelines
