Nonprofit Organization | Uniting Agriculture and Medicine to Support Food Sovereignty and Health Justice for All
About us
Our Vision: A global network of farmers, seed savers, gardeners, fishers, foragers, ranchers, healers, subsistence hunters, healthcare providers, hospitals, clinics, educators, researchers, activists, schools, academic centers, students, wild-crafters, cooks, consumers, pastoralists, forest producers, and more united in a vision of food sovereignty and health justice for all. Our intent is to advance conversations, strengthen engagement, highlight community-led initiatives, amplify efforts and inspire collaborative action to energize a more equitable and inclusive food as medicine global movement. Our Mission: To facilitate educational conversations and collaborative engagement for unifying agriculture and medicine to support food sovereignty and health justice for all. Our Why: The idea of food as medicine makes sense to many working in health care and food production. More and more, nutrition is centered in health professional training, patient care, and conversations around farming, fishing, ranching, and other foodways. However, people across many communities who want to eat well cannot access healthy or even enough food. Many of those producing and providing our food and health care navigate a multitude of inequities. Activities include: *Stewarding the Food as Medicine Global Resource Directory to increase awareness, collaboration, and engagement to benefit individuals, communities, and the planet. https://issuu.com/foodasmedicineglobal/docs/food_as_medicine_global_resource_directory_11_7_22 *Facilitating an Online Community Site to promote information exchange and shared learning. https://foodasmedicine.global/

School food is a matter of justice. Food justice is key in building a world free from oppression. And schools—among the earliest places where kids learn about food, practice building community, and often get most of their daily nutrition—are critical in shaping this world for our kids. Read FoodCorps' blog "Why School Food is a Justice Issue" to learn why the movement for food justice must include school food. ➡️ https://bit.ly/3Lb12GC Share this post if you believe school food is a justice issue! 🥕

In a shock to NO ONE who does work in rural areas, transportation is a HUGE barrier - to get food to stores and people. So when you see myself and the team from the Produce Prescription Program of South Central NY tooling around delivering food it's because we have no other option if we want to move the needle for some of the most vulnerable. “'The meal gap is profound throughout America, but rural America gets hit harder because the transportation cost to get the food is higher,” said Salaam Bhatti, the director of SNAP programs at the nonprofit Food Research and Action Center (FRAC)" "Smaller populations in rural areas make operating a grocery store more difficult. According to the most recent USDA data, 76 counties had no grocery store at all in 2016, and about 82% of those counties were rural.: "In addition to transportation barriers, lack of access to high speed internet in rural counties can exacerbate the burden of providing food for low-income families by making it harder to sign up for government benefits."

The Kichenistas film! Mary Ann Beyster Sabrina A. Falquier, MD, CCMS, DipABLM #community
The Kitchenistas film premiere in Mexico City last week was to a full house of community members at Casa Gallina. Casa Gallina does not lead with a heavy hand – they create space for change. Community-based change is inspired through their community’s participation in art creation, urban farming, multi-regional recipe development, cooking classes for all ages, storytelling and above all open, and respectful dialogue. It’s a place of opportunity. Each screening brings new treasures of experiences. We are blessed to have had the invitation from Casa Gallina, and forever moved by the passionate community of Santa Maria La Ribera in Mexico City. Thank you Josefa Ortega and your wonderful team. With moderation by Casa Gallina, our panel with three Kitchenistas (Angelica Gastelum, Claudia Lizbeth, and Patty Corona) from Olivewood Gardens & Learning Center and two honorary Kitchenistas (Sabrina A. Falquier, MD, CCMS, DipABLM, and myself) proceeded for more than an hour followed by another hour of hugging and notes of gratitude, appreciation, and realistic optimism. It was a perfect cumulation of planning over many months and of the prior days of shopping at La Mercado, cooking, and a community dinner – expressions of how traditional food access and cuisine have made changes in the health of your community. https://lnkd.in/gpCwMcFw Interested in a film screening and more? https://lnkd.in/gnNBk2Y7 Contact me or Angelica Gastelum at Olivewood Gardens & Learning Center.

An excellent resource! Mary Purdy, MS, RDN Eco-Dietitian/Nutrition and Sustainability Expert
Healthcare professionals (including dietitians) are well-positioned to be leaders in the sustainable and regenerative food systems space. 🖋 The white paper that I authored "How Practitioners Can Influence Planetary Health" was recently published and not only highlights the detrimental environmental and human health impacts of our current industrial food system, but offers ideas and solutions around how those working in healthcare can be champions around #sustainablediets and a more #sustainablefoodfuture. It also provides numerous educational resources that can help elevate knowledge and awareness and drive action. There are many pathways there! 🥗 As I quote in the paper, (Insights from Global Alliance for the Future of Food) “Those working in the health sector are better situated than most to articulate the many connections between food and health. Clinicians and public health professionals are at the frontline of care, guiding people to choices that will improve their quality of life, today and in the future.” 🔗 I'm grateful to Orgain for commissioning me to create this resource. It is hopeful to see them be a leader in the space that is helping practitioners connect the dots between sustainable food systems and human health. (The content is my own and was created without influence from Orgain) 🌎 I hope it will be helpful in making our planet a little better! #eatfortheplanet #planetaryhealth #dietitians #plantforward #soilhealth #regenerativeagriculture #organic Download here or on Orgain's site. https://lnkd.in/gSaGeUgP
