The Fond du Lac Reservation is one of six Chippewa Indian Reservations in the state of Minnesota organized as the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe under Section 16 of the Indian Reorganization Act (Wheeler-Howard) of June 28, 1934 as amended. The governing body of the Fond du Lac Reservation is the Reservation Business Committee, which is composed of a Chairperson, Secretary/Treasurer, and Three Representatives; one from District 1, Cloquet; one from District 2 Sawyer; and one from District 3, Brookston. All are elected to four-year terms on a staggered basis with the Chairman and Secretary-Treasurer also serving as members of the Executive Committee of the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe. Written personnel policies provide for the daily operation and supervision of tribal programs and staff.   • FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Indigenous Voices Echo Through the Halls of the Minnesota State Capitol: American Indian Day on the Hill Celebrates Native Leadership and Advocacy Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa - Cloquet, Minnesota (May 15, 2024) - On Monday, May 6", the Minnesota State Capitol resonated with the vibrant voices and powerful presence of Native people from all corners of the state during the annual American Indian Day on the Hill event. Organized by the Minnesota Indian Affairs Council (MIAC) and community organizers, this event served as a platform for indigenous voices to be heard, celebrated, and honored. The event, resurrected four years ago, aims to inspire Native people to consider running for elected office at all levels of government, emphasizing the importance of representation in shaping policies and decisions that affect Native communities. Reflecting on the significance of the event, Shannon Geshick, Executive Director of MIAC and Bois Forte Band of Chippewa member, stated, "It is crucial that we have folks who understand our experiences, our culture, our ways of being, our humor, our trauma, our resilience; and no one can understand those things better than us." This year's event highlighted a pivotal moment in history with the notable increase in Native representation in Minnesota government. President Robert Larsen of the Lower Sioux Indian Community eloquently summarized the significance, stating “[There is] Protection of sovereignty through representation”. Additionally, the event paid homage to esteemed elders and tribal leaders for their unwavering dedication to their communities. Among those honored were Gertrude Buckanaga, Maria McCoy, Nelda Goodman, President Robert Larsen, and our esteemed Fond du Lac Band Chairman, Kevin Dupuis Sr. The day was filled with cultural richness and meaningful dialogue, as participants gathered in the rotunda of the state capitol, sharing stories, prayers, and reflections on the importance of Native representation and sovereignty. Peggy Flanagan, Lieutenant Governor of Minnesota, expressed her gratitude for the presence of Native people, stating, "I feel better when you are here."   • FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Tribal Leadership in Action: Fond du Lac Band Delegation Champion Tribal Interests in Nation's Capital Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa – Cloquet, Minnesota (May 13, 2024) – Last week, Chairman Kevin Dupuis Sr. and a delegation of Fond du Lac Band staff demonstrated exceptional dedication and effectiveness during their recent visit to Washington, D.C. Their intensive two-day itinerary, packed with meetings with congressional members and federal agencies, underscored the Band's commitment to advancing tribal sovereignty and securing vital resources for their community. Lance Northbird, Cultural Resources Project Manager for the Fond du Lac Band, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to represent tribal interests in the nation's capital. "Direct funding is essential in moving forward to further establish our tribal sovereignty," Northbird emphasized. "Normalizing our representation in all governing spaces is vital to our youth, elders, and all ages in-between." Arianna Northbird, Environmental Program Manager for the Fond du Lac Band, highlighted the significance of being present at the decision-making table. "This opportunity will shape my future understanding in funding, policy, capacity building, and enforcing tribal sovereignty," Northbird noted, reflecting on the trip's potential impact. Vannessa Ray-Hodge, Fond du Lac Band's outside legal counsel from Sonosky, Chambers, Sachse, Endreson & Perry LLP, commended Chairman Dupuis Sr. and Fond du Lac Band staff for their outstanding performance and the positive outcomes achieved during the trip. "Their efforts underscore the importance of advocacy and collaboration with the federal government in supporting tribal sovereignty," Ray-Hodge remarked. Throughout the meetings, it became evident that Chairman Dupuis Sr. and the Band's consistent presence in Washington, D.C., have cultivated robust and positive relationships at the highest levels of Congress and federal agencies. Through the Band's unwavering support, MAIC has undergone transformative renovations aimed at better serving the needs of Native people in Minneapolis and the Metro areas. The grand reopening festivities commenced with a vibrant parade down Franklin Avenue, symbolizing the unity and resilience of the Native community. Drum groups, eagle staffs adorned with tribal flags from across Indian Country, and American Indian Movement flags led the procession, paying homage to the rich tapestry of indigenous cultures that have shaped Minneapolis's history. Tribal leaders from neighboring nations. including the White Earth Nation and Leech Lake, joined the procession, reaffirming the enduring legacy of Native presence in the city. Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan honored the occasion with her presence, recognizing MAIC's vital role in supporting the urban American Indian population. As the parade culminated at the doors of the newly renovated MAIC, guests were greeted with a palpable sense of anticipation and excitement. The Ribbon Cutting ceremony, a moment of reflection and celebration, featured Chairman Kevin Dupuis Sr. as one of the esteemed tribal leaders to speak at the event.   • We're thrilled to announce that Chairman Kevin R. Dupuis Sr. has been awarded the Outstanding Tribal Leader award at the 39th Annual Minnesota Indian Education Association (MIEA) Conference! Despite being unable to accept the award in person due to official responsibilities at the Reservation Board Committee's Monthly Open Meeting, Chairman Dupuis's presence was felt as Kami Diver, Executive Assistant to Chairman Dupuis, and Caleb Dunlap, Communications Director for the Fond du Lac Band, accepted the award on his behalf. The Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa couldn't be prouder to see our Chairman recognized for his leadership and dedication to educational and cultural enrichment within our community and across tribal communities in Minnesota.   Chairman Dupuis was one of many Fond du Lac tribal community members who participated in the annual conference. Our community also made waves in the Ojibwe Quiz Bowl, with teams representing the Cloquet School District and Fond du Lac Ojibwe School taking first and third place, respectively. Additionally, Caleb Dunlap, Fond du Lac Communications Director and Valerie Tanner, Fond du Lac Ojibwe School Principal, shared insights on a panel, further showcasing our tribal community's commitment to education and collaboration.   A little about the Minnesota Indian Education Association: The organization will celebrate its 40th year in 2024, growing alongside changes in education, particularly for American Indian students. MIEA's primary goal is to foster quality education and unity among American Indians through robust communication networks.
