Organized by the Minnesota Indian Affairs Council (MIAC) and community organizers, this event served as a platform for indigenous voices to be heard, celebrated, and honored. The event, resurrected four years ago, aims to inspire Native people to consider running for elected office at all levels of government, emphasizing the importance of representation in shaping policies and decisions that affect Native communities. Reflecting on the significance of the event, Shannon Geshick, Executive Director of MIAC and Bois Forte Band of Chippewa member, stated, "It is crucial that we have folks who understand our experiences, our culture, our ways of being, our humor, our trauma, our resilience; and no one can understand those things better than us." This year's event highlighted a pivotal moment in history with the notable increase in Native representation in Minnesota government. President Robert Larsen of the Lower Sioux Indian Community eloquently summarized the significance, stating “[There is] Protection of sovereignty through representation”. Additionally, the event paid homage to esteemed elders and tribal leaders for their unwavering dedication to their communities. Among those honored were Gertrude Buckanaga, Maria McCoy, Nelda Goodman, President Robert Larsen, and our esteemed Fond du Lac Band Chairman, Kevin Dupuis Sr. The day was filled with cultural richness and meaningful dialogue, as participants gathered in the rotunda of the state capitol, sharing stories, prayers, and reflections on the importance of Native representation and sovereignty. Their intensive two-day itinerary, packed with meetings with congressional members and federal agencies, underscored the Band's commitment to advancing tribal sovereignty and securing vital resources for their community. Lance Northbird, Cultural Resources Project Manager for the Fond du Lac Band, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to represent tribal interests in the nation's capital. "Direct funding is essential in moving forward to further establish our tribal sovereignty," Northbird emphasized. "Normalizing our representation in all governing spaces is vital to our youth, elders, and all ages in-between." Arianna Northbird, Environmental Program Manager for the Fond du Lac Band, highlighted the significance of being present at the decision-making table. "This opportunity will shape my future understanding in funding, policy, capacity building, and enforcing tribal sovereignty," Northbird noted, reflecting on the trip's potential impact. Through the Band's unwavering support, MAIC has undergone transformative renovations aimed at better serving the needs of Native people in Minneapolis and the Metro areas. The grand reopening festivities commenced with a vibrant parade down Franklin Avenue, symbolizing the unity and resilience of the Native community. Drum groups, eagle staffs adorned with tribal flags from across Indian Country, and American Indian Movement flags led the procession, paying homage to the rich tapestry of indigenous cultures that have shaped Minneapolis's history. Tribal leaders from neighboring nations. including the White Earth Nation and Leech Lake, joined the procession, reaffirming the enduring legacy of Native presence in the city. Qualified candidates will have a proven ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment with overlapping short-term and long-term deadlines; superior attention to detail; exceptional writing and analytic skills; the ability to keep confidences and strong inter-personal and organizational skills. A bachelor’s degree in Political Science or a related field or commensurate community organizing experience, and at least 2-3 years professional experience working for an elected official or in policy/advocacy are preferred.
