Following Filene's Racial Economic Equity (REE) Incubator program presentations last week in Boston during the Spark event, Catalyst Award Judge and Filene CEO Mark Meyer stated that the room we are in should be bigger... This statement was meant both literally (those of us there now know what it's like to be in a standing-room-only space when Boston is in a heat wave and the hotel AC couldn't keep up!) and metaphorically, in the sense that credit unions are there for people first, and while it is important to focus on the business side, there is no credit union business without the work that the presenting credit union and community partner teams are doing. "How do you take a bite out of a problem so big? It is this work right here, being done credit union by credit union, community by community." Program Coach Peter Holmes wisely stated at the conclusion of the capstone presentations that we are just 'at the end of the beginning.' Through these handful of projects alone, credit unions in communities across the country were talking to individuals they had never reached before -- imagine the possibilities of this work at scale. What started with 9 credit unions, 11 community partners and 5 expert coaches turned into something so much more than the sum of its parts. Filene wishes to thank Judges Emily Gnam of TruStage, Renee Sattiewhite of AACUC and Filene Fellow Jeffrey A. Robinson, Ph. D. for helping determine our finalists for the Catalyst Award. As well as huge thanks to program coaches Peter Holmes, Terri Quinton, Beverly Wolfe, Howard Holley and Shellee A. Mitchell. Thank you to Trustage and Target Foundation for making the REE Program possible. Thank you to McKaye Black and Christie Kimbell for their leadership to bring it all together. Last but not least, thank you to all the REE teams who presented last week from Kauai Federal Credit Union, Hawaiian Community Assets, Municipal Credit Union, The Bronx Community Foundation, MSU Federal Credit Union, GreenPath Financial Wellness, Veridian Credit Union, Habitat for Humanity Waterloo Region, House of Hope, 24/7 Black Leadership Advancement Consortium, Chartway Credit Union, Norfolk State University and many more supporters and partners! Watch for a Filene blog next week with project summaries, finalists, Catalyst Winner (and a special surprise prize from Renee!) and more insights from the teams and coaches. We'll also be producing a research output with lessons for all credit unions and community orgs to work together for greater impact in the coming months. As Coach and Fellow Dr. Robinson said, "social innovation is the superpower of credit unions!"
