Although people want and need local journalism, smaller outlets face difficulty generating revenue as advertising migrates online and people turn to free big tech services. This is where artificial intelligence (AI) can come into play. Assistive AI has the potential to save time and resources for reporters in newsrooms because journalists have become jacks-of-all-trades due to shrinking budgets. They have less time to focus on reporting since they spend more time doing digital chores like optimizing posts for social media, formatting files and SEO optimization. There's an opportunity here: If newsrooms embrace AI early enough beyond its current global adoption rate of 35%, they could shape how this technology develops instead of struggling with new tech platforms ten years later when competitors have outpaced them.
