Everyone Graduates Center, Johns Hopkins University

High schools, originally designed in the 20th century, are now outdated for 21st-century needs. Students from 13 middle and high schools in six states traveled to Washington, D.C., for the inaugural National Redesign Showcase to present ideas for updating schools. Robert Balfanz, director of the Everyone Graduates Center, Johns Hopkins University and a professor at the Center for the Social Organization of Schools, discussed the ideas presented at the Showcase. “The broader goal is to create supports, policy, and eventually funding for this sort of redesign work. By now, most of us are aware that chronic absenteeism rates doubled post-pandemic. The multiplicity of personal, health, social, economic, and educational disruptions caused by the pandemic made it harder for millions of students to be in school every day, even as the direct health impact of COVID-19 receded. But what does a doubling of the number of students who are missing a month or more of schooling in the school year mean? Transforming Education: Lessons from the GRAD Partnership's First Year ✨ After a challenging year marked by the pandemic's ongoing impacts, the implementation of student success systems has illuminated a path forward for schools nationwide. Blending predictive indicators with a deep focus on relationships and community engagement has led to notable improvements in student success: reductions in chronic absenteeism and decreases in course failure rates. Key Takeaways for Schools: Regularly updated and analyzed student success data is critical. The formation of well-functioning student success teams is essential. Strong, supportive relationships are at the heart of student success. These results are a testament to what's possible when schools, communities, and organizations come together with a shared goal.
