Over the past few years #ChatGPT and other #largelanguagemodels have dominated the headlines, both for their astounding skill at replicating human language and their mistakes and ethical pitfalls. But large language models only scratch the surface of how #AI is interwoven in our lives. From #industrialAI to #augmentedreality, #virtualreality, and the internet of things, there is scarcely a domain of #humanexperience to which AI is not being applied. We have a limited opportunity to figure out how to harness AI’s possibilities for the better and manage it effectively — instead of waiting for AI to manage us. Higher levels of #AIliteracy can help #faculty make informed decisions about the use of #AI in their courses and assignments. #Academic and technologies teams at Barnard College developed an AI literacy #framework to provide a conceptual foundation for #AIeducation and programming efforts in #highereducation institutional contexts. The framework is intended to meet people where they are and scaffold upon their current AI literacy level, whether they have little to no knowledge of AI or are prepared to build their own #largelanguagemodel #LLM. Online learning continues to grow and evolve. In fact, in the fall of 2022, there were 18,580,026 #adultlearners participating in #distanceeducation. Three overall categories emerge as major contributing reasons for lack of online persistence: #student factors, course or program factors, and environmental factors. As #instructors, we are somewhat limited in influencing many factors that result in student #dropoutrates. Centering student voices releases so much potential energy needed to make teaching and learning more equitable. We must use the design of digital learning as an opportunity to embrace the transformative practice of centering student voices. Here are a few ways our network partners help educators do that. 𝗦𝗵𝗶𝗳𝘁 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗰𝗶𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀 A strengths-based perspective recognizes and leverages the cultural resources, knowledge, value, and cultural capital students bring into learning spaces with them. 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮-𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 Your institution is likely using many digital learning tools with reports you can use to make instructional decisions. However, faculty need support to adapt evidence-based practices and to customize strategies to meet student needs. Data-informed instruction comes most organically from a data culture. 𝗖𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 Student-centered educators acknowledge their own biases and assumptions, examine learning materials for them, and are mindful of how their thoughts and actions reflect them. A significant form of reflection is asking how the learning experiences we design are perceived by students. For example, How likely are students to say they are all treated fairly, that their professor shows that they care about how they do in class, or that their professor encourages everyone's perspectives? 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗰𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 Facilitate conversations with big-picture questions about who students are and what their own aspirations are for themselves. Equity work requires systemic change in colleges and universities, and there are many practical ways faculty can facilitate those conversations in their departments in ways that promote change. https://lnkd.in/gDUTETtg ___ These are some of the issues our network partners help departments or other groups of educators to develop or work through in our professional services. We’re adding more programs all the time. You can learn more about our professional development partners here: https://lnkd.in/ddVbESB6 #highered #equity #digitallearning

AI has a lot of potential for #writingstudents, but we can’t let it replace the thinking parts of writing, says #writingprofessor Steve Graham. Having #AI help #students learn to write more efficiently without hijacking the #cognitivebenefits of writing should be a key goal of #educators. Finding the ideal balance will require more work from both #researchers and classroom educators, but Graham shares some initial tips for doing this currently on Tech & Learning: https://ow.ly/1voH50SICwx

One key finding from the inaugural 2024 EDUCAUSE #AILandscape Study showed most institutions are working on AI-related strategy. Of the respondents, only 11% said no one was working on an #AIstrategy at their institution. Overall, the results show that within most institutions at least some people are moving fast to incorporate #AI into #teachingandlearning or other operations, but institutions struggle to make that work comprehensive, coordinated and strategic. The tension surrounding #generativeAI in #education shows no signs of going away. If anything, #faculty members are sorting themselves into two camps. Some are despairing over its interference with #authenticlearning, and deeply worried they will have to scuttle the meaningful assignments and #assessments they’ve developed over the years because they have become too easily cheatable. Others agree that #AIabuse is a problem but focus instead on how #AI could #enhancelearning. Or they have found ways — in the short term, at least — to minimize its abuse while maintaining the integrity of their assignments. (Some argue there’s a third camp: the #professors who so far are ignoring AI’s existence.) Some professors are riding the AI wave. Others feel like they're drowning.
